The IRS is getting $80,000,000,000 to beef up its institution. They will be targeting middle class Americans and forcibly auditing them to college more taxes to fund their ridiculous spending. They are arming these agents and training them. They also have been purchasing a lot of ammo recently.

The IRS as it currently stands doesn't even have that many employees, let alone Special Agents/Criminal Investigators, which are the badged and armed federal law enforcement officers. They currently have about 2,000 of those (about the same as the DEA and ATF), out of about 83,000 employees total. Those agents are trained at FLETC in Glynco, Georgia, which is the same place that the Marshals, ATF, ICE, Secret Service and others send their agents. The idea that they would hire over 80,000 people as special agents would not only make them about 6-7 times larger than the FBI in that capacity, but there's no way they would have anywhere close to the infrastructure necessary for that to even be effectively used or stood up. When one agency has a shortage of agents, it is relatively easy for them to be temporarily supported by another; one of my neighbors years ago was a DEA special agent but spent probably half of his last few years working directly with ICE. Furthermore, the hiring process for a federal level investigator takes a very long time, and the training takes around a year after making it through the selection process, which I am intimately familiar with. Either someone is very brazenly lying about allocation of resources and intent, is completely ignorant to how federal law enforcement organizations actually work, or is willfully misleading you with their wording.

Now the rest of that is accurate - recent legislation and by extension the IRS and a huge expansion are clearly aimed at middle and upper-middle class taxpayers, and auditing records from the last 5+ years shows that these are the people who are very disproportionately targeted by the IRS for audits already. This isn't entirely out of malicious reasoning though, and has a lot to do with basically closing cases by number rather than value. The IRS can target the ultra-wealthy, but they are pretty much always lawyered up and with very competent accountants working for them, so it takes significantly more effort that may or may not even pay off in the end, while most of the rest of the 99.5% are comparatively easy pickings that don't have professionals keeping everything in check for them, and are frequently oblivious to anything being out of whack.

There is no reason for the IRS to have agents trained and armed to shoot to kill. None, whatsoever. And there are currently 2000 of these armed agents.

Audits are done via correspondence or with tax accountants or tax lawyers representing the audited. Does anyone think the IRS needs to be armed when dealing with tax accounts and tax lawyers? Of course not.

The legislation specifically allocates increased funding for enforcement. It's probably small businesses that the IRS wants to target the most, but given the IRS' history of targeting conservative organizations, it's reasonable to assume conservatives will also be a target. The Biden Aministration is also not known for adhering to the law when it comes to political opponents.

Part 3 of the legislation is the part for the IRS. Section A ii clearly allocates $45 billion for enforcement. Section A iii allocates $25 billion for operations support, which obviously includes enforcement. $4.8 billion in Section A iv allocated toward "business systems modernization". So the vast majority of the $80 billion in increased funding is for enforcement or to support the enforcement.

The Biden administration was previously pushing for a spending bill that included enough funding to hire that many over the next decade but, in reality, they are getting far fewer than that. The agency is expected to lose 50,000 employees to retirement over the next 5 years. The new hires are to address that and only a small portion of IRS are armed agents. There is no army coming to get you.

The IRS has around 80,000 employees in total. Only 2,000 are armed law enforcement personnel. The rest are accountants, clerical and administrative staff. The 87,000 figure comes from a 2 year old Treasury report that proposed hiring that many over the next decade to replace retiring workers. There are 50,000 pending retirements over the next 5 years and the 87,000 figure might be accurate at the 10 year mark. The GOP is using the fact that the agency just received a budget increase to scare voters into thinking they are increasing the size of the agency by 87,000 staff (not true) and that they will all be armed personnel (also not true). It’s unclear how many staff the new budget will allow them to hire but the overall size and function of the IRS will not drastically change. It pays to pay attention to the details.
