In my view hiring only by race is racist therefore get rid of diversity hiring. Hire the most qualified and who you like and feel would be the best fit.

It's not really a question of opinion; if you're discriminating based on race, that's racist. The three foundational principles of the United States (hell, of modern democracy, really) are free expression (you must be able to criticize the king), meritocracy (you must be able to get the job even if you're not the king's cousin), and due process (you must be safe from being thrown in jail simply at the whim of the king). Recent years have seen all three of these ideas come under attack, largely from a dedicated core group of socio-political shysters; sometimes from the lobbies that lack the guts to stand up to them. It's part of why mainstream nerd culture, probably the most meritocratic group on the planet, is so bitterly hated by these people: they won't back down, they're smart enough to see through it, and many of them are old enough to remember the time when "nerd" was a genuine insult; social disapproval doesn't scare them.

Here's the thing: the idea behind racial (and sexual) quotas is that because those groups are less present in [whatever the position in question is], there's discrimination based on race (or sex) on the part of those doing the hiring. The aforementioned group of shysters is DEEPLY devoted to the "tabula rasa" nonsense that's been debunked more often than Malthusian economics, and says that any time there's ANY disparity in outcomes, it's the result of discrimination*.

Now, it's entirely possible that there IS discrimination in hiring practices, and I agree that that should be combated. What's the best way to do that? Implement quotas, fighting discrimination with discrimination? No- anonymize the hiring process. Give applicants numbers, not names, and conduct the interviews online, instead of face-to-face. That's not a perfect solution; if the candidate went to a women-only college, you're going to know her sex, for example. But a dedicated effort will make it possible. Catch is, that's not what they want. Look at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, which decided to hold blind auditions for that exact purpose. This makes sense; it doesn't matter how you look or whether you sit to pee, it's all about how well you play. What was the public reaction? Basically nothing; most people don't care about Classical music. But then came the results, and there was LOTS of backlash, because the winners were all white males. VSO heard the criticism, and promptly promised to abandon blind auditions going forward (which, so far as I'm aware, they have).

It's really quite simple: if you believe that discrimination on the basis of demographics is wrong, then you believe it's wrong. Praising meritocracy and arguing against its implementation is rank hypocrisy.

In a perfect world yes absolutely. But the entire critique of that egalitarian "ignore race" perspective involves understanding that most people aren't going to do that.

Affirmative action comes in different forms. Some (extremists) say that we should take a talent cut so that we can meet aggressive quotas without doing the social work to ensure that underprivileged people are motivated and and interested in a historically segregated institution. Most people though, simply say that if you have equally viable candidates, hire the minority. The functionality stays the same.

But also depends on the kind of business your doing for example restaurant you need a certain cook to make the customer happy who is from different country who will make them feel home, people expect normal interactions so if you need the employee for interactions and suddenly a Muslim girl pops up with burka (religious black cloth) it will make them uncomfortable no matter how diversified people are... if it's technical work then doesn't matter what they wear or look like as long as they do the job right and make good name for you

So called "diversity" is simply a PC way of saying "non-discriminatory hiring". If you need to make a big deal, you're not hiring fairly, and are hiding it.

Yes, when I ran a department I was told that if there was a minority candidate that was qualified I had to hire them. It did not matter that there may not have been the best candidate available. On the job application that was a whole section about race. I refused to look at any of it.

Unlike Biden and the people that voted for him (the living ones, anyway) I'd ONLY hire someone that was qualified for the job regardless of their religion, social standing, skin colour or ANY other trivial bullshit!! The only other stuff I'd be concerned with is their attitude and if they smell.

I think hiring should be merrit based and done via blind audition as they used to do in the symphony back in farer days.

Absolutely not. A toddler can do any advanced job given enough time. We need to diversify everything. Not just the races of people, but in abilities and mindset. We need to represent every disability and even hire criminals of all categories. Autism, Down syndrome, paraplegics, everyone needs to be represented regardless if they are fit for the job or not. It’s time for us to take a step towards a bright future.
