One time a colleague said this about a woman. I am confident anyway and took him with me. 'Excuse me, I apologise for interrupting. I am not asking you out, although you are very beautiful. I am taken. My friend thinks you would say no if I asked you out. Would you?' She said she'd say yes if I asked. I then thanked her and bid her a good evening. In earshot my colleague decided to ask her out and she said no. Well she was a bit more expressive with her words (and expletives) but you get the gist.

Had it a few times at work from people who thought they were better than me. Actions speak louder than words in those situations. Also helps if you are all seeing and hearing. I keep a mental record (and some written) of everything people do at work as you just never know who is going to use something against you for their gain. I've brought quite a few people crashing down and burning over the years who thought I/colleagues weren't in their league. Just to make it clear, only people who were deserving of being brought crashing down. Bosses, colleagues etc who treated people badly, with disdain, disrespectful or hurtful.

If someone says to you "You are out of my league", they mean that you are much better at something than they are. It's a compliment.

Or they might mean that you are better than them in general, which would be an admission of very low self esteem.

If a person says to you "I'm out of your league", they are telling you to buzz off.

Depends.  If it's in arrogance, then smile back at them that I'm in a bigger league than them, then.  If it's a joke, then tell them I'll happily buy them a place to join the bigger league.

When I was 15 I always kept saying "she is out of my league" whenever my crush was near me. My female 25+ older friend said there are no leagues and she kept repeating it. Until one day a girl of 7 years old said "I'm out of your league". Her father called her a prima donna along with all her friends. So I guess embarrassing them is only solution.
