What if anything should society do about parents that abuse and sometimes severely injure or kill their children?

Parents have evolved to be the best protectors of their children. For millions of years children of abusive parents are less likely to survive so they don't pass on the genes of their abusive parents. In the short term, it seems so right to protect children from their abusive parents. However, in the long term their genes get passed on resulting in a greater percentage of abusive parents. However, that may take 1,000 or even10,000 and you cannot plan for what may happen that far into the future.

First... assessment of the situation and issues by counselor. Some parents need to be removed from the place until things calm down, but most need to stay together.

We need mentoring program to help train the parents how to raise or manage kids successfully from others that have , and therapy to help them with their issues. Therapy for the kid. I'd suggest that in churches/religious orgs, not the govt. The messes up everything they touch. The role should be based around love and desire to help others, not obligation. We might make it a civic duty and promote it, not require. Our family could do be mentor right now and I've seen this kind of program in a prior church.

I'm involved in raising my teen step daughter on a daily basis. The things I've seen on the way, if not for good and well trained parents, supportive people, I could see how things go wrong and get destructive. I've seen relationships blow up and the kids stressed to the max. People can fail evenwhen they are strong, stress, lack of skills, challenges they don't understand including personalities. You can't pick your kids... some kids are more challenging for certain parents if they are opposites. So gotta learn each other and work together.

Lastly meditation for everyone... way too much stress in our lives and not enough bonding time.

Well obviously if they kill their children they're going to get the death penalty.
If they severely injured their children then clearly they lose their rights to the children.
These cases are the extreme which therefore the answers are easy now when you get milder cases where the parents are rough with the children they hurt the children even with bruises but no broken bones or major injuries that's where it gets tricky. That is weird children protective services don't always jump in and do what they need to do and I'm speaking out of experience because right now I got emergency custody of my son because my ex hurt him physically however the cops refuse to arrest him even though he left my son's ribs with bruises because he didn't break any of my sons ribs now you tell me if that's not f$#ked up. This isn't my ex's first situation with children's protective services he's hurt my son before but they've done nothing about it the last time because the school nurse didn't take pictures. and this time I have no idea what they're going to do because he didn't break any bones. It's ridiculous it shouldn't take broken bones or severe injury for children to be protected. I'm fighting this tooth and nail but I've been fighting this for 3 years now this is the first time I got a good win where I have my son in my custody. About 3 years ago I fought left and right to keep my son's custody but the court had told me that my ex seem to be a changed man that he didn't have a DCF case in 10 years... 10 years ago he punched my daughter 3 years ild at the time in the stomach. Despite this 3 years ago My pleading went on deaf ears. I told the courts if they give my ex split custody of my son he would gurt him they igbored me. I was right as soon as the case closed he had hurt my son dragging him up the stairs and DCF got involved but as I said nothing was done at that time because no pictures were taken by the school nurse. Oh and my son had no broken bones! 🙄.
This time Im fighting everyone DCF the court my ex! I'm not giving my son up!

However, in all species, you can observe that behaviors such as caring for their children produces more surviving descendants. If you wish to believe parents that don't care for their children produce more descendants, that is your right. Natural selection is a proven theory. You are suggesting quite directly that children carry genes that perpetuate a cycle of abuse. That is NOT proven by any stretch of the imagination. The prevailing theory suggests abuse is a learned behavior, not genetic. Stopping parents from killing their kids and ending the abuse provides opportunities to teach abused children better ways of managing conflict and stress. That behavior can be taught but generally it is genetic. Humans have evolved to provide some assistance to others in need because ultimately that behavior increases our numbers or certainly did for almost all human history when survival was very difficult and our species could have easily gone extinct. If failure to care for their young, produced the most descendants, that would be the norm. Germany has the youth protection services and they got involved in my family when i was in the 8. th grade.

Unfortunately my parents decided to evade them by moving out of Germany to further abuse me in a poor country, that has no youth protection services whatsoever. Abuse is quite rampant.
