Hurt the image of Christianity and the bible to who? Christians or those that would like to ban Christianity altogether?
If you look at most of these groups either left or right wing there's usually the people running them that are making a fortune.
Meanwhile there is much work being done by Catholics, these recent hard times have left many in need and looks like things are about to get worse.
It already has.
A huge mistake Republicans made decades ago was getting cozy with Christian fundamentalists. The true spirit of Christianity is one of compassion, helping the poor and downtrodden , walking away from war, forgiveness of past transgressions, healing the sick, respecting the world around us and science.
Yet , when I see these right wing Christian groups in the US they do everything that is unChristian and more - they look down on the poor, they want to deny medical care to the sick , they are war mongers who are obsessed with vengeance, they distrust science.
I have met many Christian fundamentalists in my life and they were not nice people at all and one Characteristic I noticed in many of them is that the all seemed to delight in the suffering of others.
The image of Christianity in the US has already been tarnished.
I'm a Christian fundamentalists and I'm not nothing like these people though.
It's like the KKK don't actually represent true Christianity.
Me personally I think it's beautiful when people love God and worthship the Lord.

The only way that happens is through violence because obviously not everyone is going to accept such laws and concepts.

As all American Governments were created by and for Christians. American Government rules have always been almost exclusively Christian rules which people living in this country have always been forced to live under.

Its true Thomas Jefferson was thought to have some unorthodox believes at the time, this however is not in the protestant world particularly incomparable with Christian faith.

@monorprise: In the old testament the ancient Israelites were in covenant with God and living under a theocracy, in the modern world only nations that live under a theocracy are Muslims because nearly 100% of the population of those nations are Muslims and subscribe to Islam as their religion.
God didn't make a covenant with America or any other nation except the ancient Israelites.
