Should Soccer Matches be outlawed and soccer balls be confiscated?

At least 129 people are dead and about 200 more injured, police say, after chaos and Indonesia stadium tragedy: violence erupted late on Saturday following an Indonesian league soccer match between two of the nation’s biggest teams.

Supporters of Arema FC and rival Persebaya Surabaya clashed after home team Arema FC was defeated 3-2 at a match in the city of Malang in East Java.

Supporters from the losing team had “invaded” the pitch and police fired tear gas, triggering a stampede which led to cases of suffocation, East Java police chief Nico Afinta said during a press conference following the event.

“First of all, a riot happened,” Nico said.

“From Saturday’s incident (so far), 127 people have died – including two members of the police,” he said earlier. Close to 200 people were also injured, he added.

Videos filmed from inside the stadium late into the night and shared on social media showed fans, dressed in red and blue, storming the field and clashing with Indonesian security forces, who appeared to be wearing riot gear.

Video footage broadcast on local news channels also showed images of body bags, Reuters reported.

The severity of their injuries remained unclear. Officials said that many had been admitted to nearby hospitals, suffering from “lack of oxygen and shortness of breath.”

Lots of people at soccer matches in many countries die when people riot when their team loses. So soccer matches should be outlawed and all soccer balls confiscated because of violence.

I couldn't believe when I first saw it, but it's real. Soccer itself is not the problem. It's the fans. They are taking these rivalries too close to heart. The fans are the problem, not the sport or game. How do we solve the problem? That requires some thinking.

Seems like there's more excitement in stands then field. Watching guys dive and flop around anytime someone comes near them. Two hour game and its 1-0 woooo so exciting !

Soccer sucks.

They should implement penalties for diving where the team plays short a player like in hockey. If you act injured you stay off until medically cleared you can’t cone back running immediately.

Playing too defensively to go for penalty kicks awards the opposing team a goal. Too many games are long drawn out bore fests where they play for penalty shots.

The absolute mind numbing boringness of soccer is what contributes to the foul audience. Its so slow and boring they get obliterated drinking and act stupid.

it is indeed an infamous "tradition"

soccer has always resonated with the populist sentiments of the people, and the lower classes as well.. so yes, there is always certain sectors of the population who see this "tribalism" as an opportunity to seize, so they do use the sense of belonging to push their own agendas... and it does happen in so many countries

but these fights are not about the fans... but certain groups of people who mingle and mix within the fans of football clubs, nowadays they are called "ultras" and they are called that because they are either ultra-nationalist, ultra-racist, ultra-violent or ultra-stupid, so every weekend or every game... they do plan for these fights against the ultras of rival teams and set them all up via social media

and yes, even the killing of each other can be planned in advance, they know very well what they are going to do and who are they going to target as well... because many of these ultras are criminal and lowlifes as well who have "nothing else to lose"

Seems they should have a limit on how many can attend in case things go bad so that can’t happen again
