The immediate riots were triggered by the death of one black ex-con. The other cases were handled individually. Officers were tried fairly in a court of law, and judged on the basis of whether they were guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, for even the unarmed can be dangerous. Sometimes of course, families were given payouts by the city. A lot of money which could have gone to other uses.
