Kwarteng met Truss for crunch talks in Downing Street after cutting short a US trip. In a letter to the prime minister, Kwarteng said Truss's vision for economic growth was "right" and he still supported it.
The prime minister has appointed former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt who backed Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership contest as the new chancellor. Truss's pledge to cut taxes was at the heart of the economic agenda that won her the Tory leadership at the start of September.
As I said many times in the past weeks, following the status quo was simply not an option," wrote in his letter. "For too long this country has been dogged by low growth rates and high taxation that must change if this country is to succeed."
Responding to Kwarteng in her own letter, Truss said she was "deeply sorry" to lose him and thanked him for putting "the national interest first" by standing down. "We share the same vision for our country and the same firm conviction to go for growth" Truss said.
The dramatic dismissal of Kwarteng makes him the second shortest-serving chancellor after just 38 days in the job. A long-time ally of Truss, Kwarteng shared her tax-cutting economic ideology and was seen as her 'political soulmate' when he was appointed to the role on 6th September.
The mini budget announced by Kwarteng on 23rd September, included £45 billion of tax cuts and an energy package worth an £60 billion over six months, partly funded by borrowing.
There were few details on how the government would fund the package, which left financial markets reeling, sent the pound plummeting, and forced the Bank of England to bail out pensions funds. The chancellor was due to make a financial statement on 31st October, but it is unclear whether that will change.

It was the right decision... someone had to go for the disastrous budget changes that were presented, and Liz Truss is trying to save herself and her Conservative government. I'm not sure that's going to happen, it may be not enough and too late.
What pissed the British public off was the tax cuts only benefited the top earners. At a time many are struggling with rising costs it struck a sour note. Contrary to what Liz thinks trickle-down economics don't work, the money just trickles into their pocket and stays there.
The whole budget had the look of being a two-minute rush job designed to appeal to wealthy Tory supporters and donors.
Liz Truss cares more about sustaining her popularity rather than making things right/following her word. She sacked someone she through was good, then thought that her 'team' was not popular regarding their thinking with the tax cuts. People voted for Liz when she said she supported tax cuts but when she came into power and saw she was wrong, she changed her mind.
Prime Fuckwit set up the quasi-Chancellor - presumably because she thought firing someone central at the start would make her appear tough. Instead of indecisive and so far beyond stupid there's no adequate word.
Appointing Jeremy Cunt as his suck cessor is a sign of desperation.

She was half right. She should have resigned herself since his notorious uncosted "mini-budget" was agreed with her beforehand and had her full support.
The only question remaining is how long the Conservative Party is prepared to keep embarrassing themselves by leaving her in post.
