Bannon sentenced - was this enough?

Stephen K. Bannon, a right-wing podcaster and longtime adviser to former president Donald Trump, was sentenced Friday to four months in prison and fined $6,500 for refusing to cooperate with a Congressional investigation into the Jan. 6 attack on the U. S. Capitol.

I think 4 years would have been more appropriate for this asshole, but you tell me. On the bright side, at least in prison, they will make him take showers...

that's not much for contempt of congress. If they ever call me for something I don't want to talk about, I'll just take the jail time.

probably 2 years be meaningful. that said, I'd rather have people in jail who are physically dangerous... if there's lack of space in jails.

I am not a fan of this guy but I think it is a national disgrace the way Biden has the DOJ go after anyone associated with President Trump. He has the 4 months coming for running that fake organization and stealing the donations so I guess karma works when justice doesn't.

A federal judge has ruled that four emails between Trump and Eastman must be released to the Jan 6 committee because they're evidence of a crime and therefore not subject to attorney-client privilege. (They were Eastman telling Trump that he shouldn't claim specific numbers in a court filing because they weren't verified, Trump used them anyway. Under oath. That's a crime.)

Barr did pretty much work for Trump, though. He drew the line at supporting Trump's "bullshit" lies about the election, but he did a lot of dodgy stuff for Trump, like letting Flynn off despite his confession of guilt and misrepresenting the Mueller report.

He was stupid. He could have appeared and simply refused to answer any questions. If they then granted immunity to compel testimony, he could have done a typical, "I do not recall."

It's totally based on what the federal sentencing law for his crime is.

If it falls between 4 to 6 months then it was enough.

Nevertheless, it's probably better he got only 4 months because more time and the Trump cult will accused Democrats of conspiring to take down any Trump allies down. 😂

and it’s all happening in a October. That’s a hell of a “surprise” and a whooooole lot of coincidences.

But you can be sure none of this is intentional. It’s all just a strange confluence of events that make these things just keep happening. Definitely not political. Nope. 🙄

You can't put someone in jail for failing to appear before Congress. Congress is a legislative body, not a judicial one.

Of COURSE we can. There is a federal law about this.

@msc545. Okay. I just looked it up. But legally, that law applies to the Senate. Courts have ruled that it applies to the House as well, but those rulings were incorrect.
So what they're doing now is basically unconstitutional.

No, I know Judge Cannon is a Trump stooge, which is why she was overruled by two other Trump appointed judges and one other. Bannon broke the law.

The system, as a whole, with appeals, etc., isn't too bad, despite McConnell and Trumps' best efforts rigging SCOTUS.

Just because your "legal opinion" is that "those rulings were incorrect" doesn't mean they were.

That actually seems fair to me. assuming the guy is not a Flight Risk and that he posted some sort of bail or collateral or is wearing an ankle bracelet, I think allowing him to remain free on appeal is a reasonable thing to do given the fact that if the Appellate Court reverses his conviction, and he was not free on appeal, he would have been punished unjustly.
