Rishi Sunak will become Britain's next prime minister after he won the race on today to lead the Conservative Party, tasked with steering a deeply divided country through an economic downturn set to leave millions of people poorer.
One of the wealthiest politicians in Westminster, Sunak will become the country's first leader of colour and our third prime minister in less than two months, as he takes over during one of the most turbulent eras in British political history.
He replaces Liz Truss, who only lasted 44 days before she resigned, needing to restore stability to a country reeling from years of political and economic turmoil, and seeking to lead a party that has fractured along ideological lines.
He told his lawmakers in parliament that they faced an "existential crisis" and must "unite or die". He told the country it faced a "profound economic challenge". "We now need stability and unity, and I will make it my utmost priority to bring our party and our country together," he said.
Sunak, likely to be appointed prime minister by King Charles on Tuesday, will also have to work hard to hold Britain's dominant political party together after some accused him of treachery earlier this year when he resigned from the cabinet of former leader Boris Johnson, triggering his downfall too.
Other Conservatives say he is too rich to understand the day-to-day economic pressures building in Britain, and question whether he could ever win an election for a party that has been in power for 12 years.
British government bonds rallied aggressively in the run-up to Sunak's victory, and extended their gains on Monday. The 30 year gilt, which suffered unprecedented losses after the mini-budget on September 23rd has recovered to levels seen that day before the announcement.

Do you think it's time for a general election in the UK?
Definitely. The last election was back in 2019, and was primarily a second referendum on Brexit, and to a lesser extent, a vote between the two very controversial figures of Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn. Brexit has happened. Both leaders are gone. Circumstances are now vastly different, post Covid, from what they were three years ago, to the point where those manifestos are irrelevant. What the UK is getting now, is not what anybody voted for.
Had the Tories immediately replaced Johnson with Sunak, and had he done a decent job as PM, most people would probably let it go, and just got on with their lives - but with the whole Truss debacle and the narrowly-avoided return of Johnson, it's clear the party is a shambles, and not fit to be running a country.
Honestly I'm not sure. I think the UK and US are in the same boat in terms of being too divided for anything to really change for the better, no matter who is in charge. Hate to say it but disasters and mass tragedies do force people together. Human history is full of things being brought back from the brink by one or the other. So maybe it's time for life to kick everyone in their collective back side.
Not exactly fun to think that way. But hope is fading and some people just want to keep pushing their side of this entire mess. It's also people on both sides doing it. So why not paint your face with Joker makeup and just go nuts?
An election seems to be the best thing to happen. Let the people of the UK decide if the Tories should stay in power (despite all their transgressions) or whether it's time for a change to a Liberal government.

Sunak is responsible for a lot of the current fuckups and his poorly implemented furlough scheme cost the UK billions. As did his poor handling when he was in number 11
