Technically police are not there to keep anyone safe, their job is strictly clean up after a crime, to figure out who did it and bring them to justice.

The SCOTUS has already ruled in several cases that police have no legal requirement to protect anyone.

That said, I'm all for more protection of schools, be it police or some other special agency created with school defense as its only purpose.

The districts here have already been remodeling elementary schools for 20+ years to have one entrance/exit, to prevent non-custodial parents from picking up kids without permission or people pretending to be parents. There are other doors for emergency exits, that set off alarms but everyone has to come and go through the main entrance which happens to go right by the front office, and people have to be buzzed in.

Some say that is like a prison, I say it is like a fort.

Some of the junior high and high schools have started the remodeling process to make them earth quake safe and follow the similar rule of one or two main entrances/exits... that can be guarded.

That seems like it would be useful... then again here, it is legal for people to conceal carry in the schools and has been for over a decade and no mass shootings. No would be shooter has any idea which adult might be carrying... could be the teacher or a janitor.

That's not correct. Crime deterrence and prevention are core duties of law enforcement. General patrolling means primarily to be visible.

@DryGermanGuy Maybe in Germany but the Supreme court here has ruled on several cases, over the last 40 or so years, stating police have no legal requirement to protect anyone.

That's interesting. I am not a lawyer, but is such a ruling not meant to be a sort of blanket protection against "unrealistic" litigation from the public? As in, a guy hikes in the woods, gets bitten by a bear and then wants to sue the police for not arriving fast enough?

@DryGermanGuy Some are but some aren't, some are where police are notified about someone violating a protection order and they ignore it, even though the guy has made a threat to come get them and kill them, and he did... but police don't have to do anything to enforce a protection order.

Others are alone that, such as when a mass shooter shoots up a school and police didn't stop it fast enough, that they aren't responsible for being slow. Thus protection from lawsuits, but in the US suing police for anything is pretty hard if not impossible.

The ultimate take is that police should try to protect people and communities but they aren't required to. Especially rural where I am, police are up to 90 minutes away... even in the city when I lived there, 15 minutes was still along time if something was happening.

Not sure it would help. People I know in Texas are dealing with fights non stop in school, they are spreading out where they leave and come into campus on the bus. Even bus drivers are dealing with BS from the kids. There have been a ton of lockdowns already. Parents are ready to switch their kids back to home school

@Agape93 I had forgotten about that, so I checked again, many more incidents like that, guns mistakenly and carelessly fired in class, forgotten at public bathrooms and even fired accidentally during safety demonstrations... lol

but, a much bigger concern would be the many cases in which teachers are already fighting and assaulting each other with students, with other teachers, with employers... adding armed fire guns to all that does not sound sensible...

and then, the already prevalent trend "suicide by police" what if the "suicide by teachers" situations start to bubble up

@Agape93 unfortunately, that could be the more probable scenario... even if just intimidating, a teacher could just display the armed gun while carrying it, and that could be enough to make a vulnerable student very nervous and what not
