Do you find it rude if two people speak a different language right in front of another person who doesn't understand it?

I'm on like a 3rd grade level for speaking Spanish. My best friend, her family, and most of her other friends are fluent. When they get together, it's Spanish all the time, and what can I do? I'm not going to demand they speak English (I would never anyway). About half of them do and they do speak to me in English, but there are many points when all together that I'm struggling to hang on to conversations and do feel left out. My friend knows this. We've had this conversation, and she makes a lot of effort to make me feel more included and I appreciate that. In that situation, I don't feel it's rude because they are in my shoes at work, or in school all the time and so when they are with friends and family, they're comfortable speaking in their own tongue. I am still studying Spanish and take it as a challenge to improve just as many had to learn English so they could be more included.

If the people don’t speak English, for example, then more people won’t mind if they speak their language.


As for me, I think languages are cool to listen to, so long as they don’t deliberately switch off when they need to gossip about me. Lol

If it were a 3 way conversation that began in one language that they could all speak and then for whatever reason switched to another mid-way then yes I would think this could be deemed rude... as its excluding the third person in the conversation for no apparent reason... If there was a reason like certain words/things can only be put across in their own language then fair enough but they should also explain this so the person understands why they changed mid conversation.

If it's 2 people having a conversation between themselves and the third person isn't part of the conversation and just happens to be nearby then no it's not rude.

It does tend to be very rude if you can tell by their body language that they're talking about you, which I have experienced before. A few times they were even saying racial things about me and they thought I didn't understand it. They get very surprised when you speak their language back to them and they feel embarrassed that you probably heard what they said.

Other than that, if they're a doctor and a nurse from the same country and speaking their language in front of you, or some other scenario like that, then it doesn't really bother me, no.

If they can't speak the common language, then it's not so bad, but otherwise, depending on context, it can definitely be rude and can at least give the impression that they're talking about me.

Maybe I'm just a bit paranoid, because often times when I'm out, people stare at me anyway and I'm sure some say shit to me, amongst their friends.

Only if they are purposely excluding the third person from conversation. When I'm in a mixed party of Danish and English speakers I switch language all the time depending on whom I'm talking to as a means of inclusion.

If im going around my business and not talking to them its none of my business.

If im talking to them ( they can of corse speak the same launguge as me) and they speak a different lauguage while we are still talking i find it a little rude.

Not if that person is not from their country and it is a private conversation, I live in the UK (North of England and I have as much chance of hearing Polish, Welsh, Manx, Gallic (Scot's & Irish), Japanese, Chinese, aside Standard English, and it is common practice in the Lake District to shift to dialect if using licence free Walkie Talkies on security jobs to frustrate eavesdroppers.

Yeah it can be rude, mostly it depends on the way how they talk and you can feel if they're talking badly about you and sometimes the other person doesn't know your language and it's needed that the one translated back and forth etc

If you don't know the other person then there's no need to worry about being rude. So it's ok to chat on a bus. However, if they're part of your group then you should speak in the common tongue.

As I don't know what they're saying it's hard to find it rude by itself. But I'd prefer we at least try to speak the same language if there's only pne spoken i the country.

I don't find it rude at all especially if I am in another country. I am advisor to foreign nationals, and they speak to one another in a different language. After they discuss their issues, they come back to me in English.

C. If it’s bad stuff, then it’s rude, no matter which tongue! I prefer to speak in a language that others who can hear me don’t understand, like Pig Latin, as I get paranoid and other people often eavesdrop, which can also be rude.
