Just to be clear, I condemn all political violence. However, in my opinion political violence based on falsehoods is worse than when it's based on genuine grievences. The real guilty parties are the ones who told them the lies, but they get off scott-free.

While it was orchestrated by idiots, chief among them Trump himself, it did have a chance of succeeding.

Pence could have broken his oath to the constitution and pretended the forged alternate electors were valid or at least nullified the results from those states. The attack on the Capitol could have stopped Pence from performing his duty on the given day, by removing him from the Capitol and keeping him from going back (which was why he refused to get into a Secret Service vehicle during the attack), or simply by killing him and maybe some legislators. Or they could have stolen the EC votes he was supposed to count (an aid rescued them from the room before the rioters took over). In the resulting chaos, Trump could have declared that he was to remain president, and his hand-picked SCOTUS might well have backed him up.

Ignoring all these things makes Jan 6th a practice run for 2024. We already expect losing Republicans not to accept the results of their elections in a week's time (they're saying it out loud). If that happens, will you accept that I might be right?
