Consider what I regard as the resulting aftermath of each of these events:

JFK Assassination - Result - Great mourning. Loss of a fresh sense of hope for the U. S. Distrust of U. S. governmental agencies and foreign powers. The U. S. flounders in its grief, potentially affecting the nation to this day.

9/11 attacks - Result - Large loss of life. Great mourning. Uniting of U. S. populace. Greater awareness that there are those who would do harm to others because the attackers simply believe in the destruction of all those who do not believe as they do.

Pearl Harbor - A nation state gambles on attempting to destroy the U. S. because of economic sanctions. Result - Eventual extremely large loss of life. Great mourning. The uniting of U. S. resolve, resulting in the largest expansion of U. S. world power since its inception.

Nixon resigns - Result - Further distrust of government.

COVID - Result - The world is thrown into turmoil. Extremely large loss of life. Further ramifications yet to be fully known. The outlook is bleak.

Events of 1/6/21 - A small group behaves in an irrational manner. Result - Increased polarization of the U. S. populace due to widespread publication of post-event extremist views. Continued impact yet to be known. May cooler heads prevail.

In my opinion, the darkest moment since 1941 for THE WORLD and the U. S. is COVID.

The passage of the Patriot Act, with only sixty six representatives and ONE senator voting against it. That was the day the government decided that civil rights were only as "inalienable" as they wanted them to be.

That's if we have to pick just one day; if we expand it to one event, I'd give it to the public response to Snowden's revelations; we KNEW the government was opposed to our freedoms, but when we saw direct evidence that the Stasi had been reborn in Washington, the populace at large just shrugged, called the hero who exposed it a traitor, and went back to browsing Google on their smartphones.

I was so angry.

If I was alive & aware during the Pearl Harbor bombing, I'd be so angry too.

They make the booms and busts, make the wars and twist the hearts of the people.
