How do you prevent crime in the usa?

Crime is a big problem in the usa. So how do you solve it? Maybe build more prisons where death is always a possibility. Maybe make prison a place where criminals is the last place on earth they would want to be? As of now the prisons in the usa do not deter crime but rather encouraging it. Who could argue, 3 hot means a bed and clean clothing. What's not to like about prison in the usa? Did I mention tax payers pay for these inmates? Perhaps it would be wise to turn these prisoners into slaves?

*Sigh* We have extensive scientific evidence for how to combat crime. The problem is that people really dont like the truth and would rather continue with this flawed system because it makes them feel better.

So how do you really combat crime? First of all you need to recognize that its a social issue, meaning you need to change society to resolve it. Things like providing jobs with good wages does wonders to lower crime as do providing free services like healthcare, education etc.. People happily living in a thriving society are far less likely to turn towards crime.

But that is just one step. Perhaps the easiest honestly but you would be surprised how many people dont want a functional society. Its the next few things that become the real bitter pill for people to swallow.

First of all, your feelings dont matter. Only facts. As such, forget any notion of costs and "fairness" since it has no place in fighting crime. Why do i say this? Because punishment does not work to deter future crime. You can execute, torture and turn prisoners into slaves all you want but it will just make the problem worse. The best way to prevent them from escaping prisons is not to build ever higher chain-link fences but to put a TV and an Xbox in their cells.

Giving them education, medical and psychological help etc.. A prison that actually prevents future crime starts to look more and more like a vacation spot rather than a maximum security facility housing the worst people in our society but that is what it takes to have the biggest decrease in future crime.

Granted, this is just scratching the surface but I think I made my point and why this will not happen in USA. People does not want results, they want revenge. They are not driven by logic but by feelings. They want to punish criminals and make them suffer, especially if they themselves are the victims. They do not care if this is just a vicious cycle that will lead to even more crimes and victims in the future.

In other words, I think you are doomed to keep your high crime rate in USA for the foreseeable future.

I won't disagree with what @Soteris said, but that's slightly simplistic because that denies human nature...

If just having a decent job would prevent crime, we wouldn't have white collar crime and criminals like Donald Trump. Money really is the root of (almost all) evil. Especially since lots of crime is "easy money".

People are going to cut corners and bend the rules or laws any way they can because struggling to survive is, well, a struggle. So, any advantage here and there is enticing. It's human nature.

The reason why prison doesn't deter crime or rehabilitate is you're putting the criminal in with like-minded people. It's a bit like sending a far right extremist to a Trump rally to teach him to respect gay black liberals.

Schools should identify future criminals and install programs to make them change their mindset.

Give the youth more opportunities to better themselves. More scholarships, or hobby schooling interests that end result in job opportunities from what education is gained. Having a choice doesn’t hurt. Smarter kids with skills would be able to make smarter choices.

It would be far wiser to turn them into citizens, rather than pariahs. Get caught smoking a joint, and you can almost kiss a financially successful life goodbye; you might as well go whole hog and turn career criminal.

The people who make that decision aren't evil, they're desperate. You don't make the populace safer by making desperate people MORE desperate; quite the opposite. If you know getting caught mugging someone carries a death sentence, you ain't leaving ANY witnesses. If throwing people in jail made us safer, the US would the safest country on Earth. We have more people in jail than CHINA does. Not more per capita- MORE.

You want to reduce crime? Make the alternative more appealing. Make it possible to support a family of four on a single income without a college degree again, and the crime rate will plummet.

Get DAs to prosecute crime. If you let shoplifters go with a warning you will get more shoplifters. How come democrats cannot understand that simple concept. Also build more prisons and don't make them like 5 star hotels. Prison is supposed to be a punishment.

I think you may be the one missing the simple concept. If jailing people actually reduced crime, the US should be the safest country in the world given it’s massive inmate population.
But that’s not what we see. It’s almost like it isn’t a deterrent for the criminal minded.

Countries with severe penalties have less crime. People that come from a good home are much less likely to be criminals. So punish crime and make strong healthy families a priority,
