People who know nothing about science, or who keep pushing it down the road. There is a near 100% scientific consensus that this is real and this is happening. If we don’t fix it soon, the damage to the planet will be catastrophic and irreversible. Whatever other bull people are worried about that should come first. It’s beyond sickening.
+1 yVery simple: because the entire focus has been on global warming, rather than the whole spectrum of anthropogenic climate change; on the Greenhouse Effect, rather than the whole spectrum of global warming; and carbon dioxide, rather than the whole spectrum of greenhouse gases. CO2 is a relatively minor player in that field; methane is far above it, and the reigning king is sulfur hexaflouride, whose primary source is... the manufacture of solar panels. And since it's the solar and wind industry bankrolling the whole movement, it's not going to be open about that.
The bigger issue is that there's no proof. Oh, the globe is certainly getting warmer, but it IS orbiting a giant nuclear fusion reactor. Are humans contributing? Probably- but there's no firm evidence of that. Of course there isn't; we have nothing to compare it to, and by the time we DID know, it would be far too late to do anything about it. So it would be reasonable to expect people to overlook that and make some necessary changes- but. But the model that's being promulgated is the one from the seventies that claimed that by the year 2000, Florida would be under ten feet of water. And I'm here to tell you, my feet are bone dry. Nor am I the only one; sixteen million other people will tell you the same thing.
Of course, one inaccurate model doesn't mean the whole theory's wrong- but sticking to that model decades after it's been soundly disproved indicates that you're either unwilling to listen to evidence (and thus could be right only be coincidence) or crying wolf about a leashless Chihuahua. Further, in combating CO2 emissions, you need to seriously curtail fossil fuel consumption. This leaves you with three options: 1. nuclear. 2. geothermal. 3. failure. The same people histrionically insisting we're all going to die are the ones pushing for option 3. They're fundamentally no different from the street lunatics carrying "The End Is Near!" placards; it's only rational to not take them seriously.
Besides, this planet has endured five mass extinctions WAY worse than anything we can do, the big whack that kicked off the Moon, and countless other environmental horrors. We may wipe ourselves out (which is unlikely; far better odds we'll just destroy our civilization), but the planet, and life in general, will get along just fine.

Why don't we talk about the desirability of earth's current Ice Age climate and the otherwise inevitability of anther glaciation?
- +1 y
@monorprise Also valid points- but to be fair, ANY kind of major climate disruption is going to cause HUGE economic damage and probably spark a few wars.
- +1 y
@NamerOfStars Its hard to imagine global warming being anywhere near as disruptive as the otherwise inevitable glaciation.
At worse warming means moving a few cities inland in less time than it took to build them, in exchange vast currently uninhabitable 30% of northern and southern lands become use-able, the world becomes more green, with longer growing seasons as we approach the green house climate that dominated 85% + of earth's history. - +1 y
@monorprise Hard to imagine? Really? The ice caps melt, raising sea levels by about 300 feet. That knocks out about 20% of the land we're currently inhabiting, and turns another vast section (I haven't been able to get good numbers on any real projections) into a flood plain- but a SALTWATER flood plain, which means all the arability is gone. You'd see massive displacements of hundreds of millions of people, and a HUGE decrease in food production. It WOULD happen over a few centuries, so you're not likely to see wars break out, but still, it's a massive blow to human civilization. Completely survivable, however- except that that's not the only issue. You raise the temperature enough, and the methane hydrate frozen into crystals in the deep ocean starts thawing out. If that happens, the methane raises, the temperature increases still further, and more clathrates melt- exacerbating the problem. By the time it's all melted, the average planetary temperature is over 100 degrees, and the extinction rate outpaces the P-T extinction as the biggest on record. At that point, we'd need a supervolcanic eruption to SAVE us.
By contrast, humanity did just fine during the last glacial maximum, which ended fifteen thousand years ago. It's EASY to imagine global warming doing worse damage- if you move beyond the hysterics of the doomsayers and look at the worst case scenario data. - +1 y
@NamerOfStars Sea levels would rise only about 230 feet, In trade this would make most of Alaska, Canada, and Russia inhabitable.
The best estimate I can get is we would only lose about 4.21% more of our surface to water. Leaving us with 24.82% of Earth's land with far more of it being inhabitable.
earthscience.stackexchange.com/.../if-all-the-ice-melted-what-percentage-of-the-earths-surface-would-be-water
The fears about run-away Greenhouse effects ignore the fact that the Earth spent 85% of its history ice free at far warmer temperature. The real problem leading to the ice age is geography specially the fact that we have soo much coastline and erosion, that has removed soo much from the atmosphere already.
As for the ice age, yes we could survive but there were fewer than 2 million of us around 10 thousand years ago already a few thousand years after the current Holocene had begun.
https://donsmaps.com/icemaps.html
I have little doubt with modern tecnoligy we would do far better than our ancestors but a lot of the earth would be covered with ice, the climate would be shifting far more rapidly.

We have REAL environmental problems that really need to be addressed more thoroughly - plastics in the ocean (microplastics especially) and chemicals and heavy metals in the water supply being among the biggest, but these get nearly no attention because everyone is far too focused on climate change that we can do almost nothing about.
Ever thought about why that is? Here's a hint: climate change is very easy to exploit for massive profits - cleaning up plastics and chemicals is expensive and difficult. Which do you think billionaires prefer? And who owns the (vast majority of the) scientists? That would be those same billionaires, who provide the grant money that employs those very same scientists.
There have been at least a dozen former publicly funded scientists who have explained how incredibly political science has become, and how it is virtually controlled by Washington, given that most funding is funneled through the government, and who controls the government? Lobbyists - who work mostly for mega corporations, who don't want chemicals and microplastics to be given much attention, preferring everyone focuses on climate change, which is easy for them to exploit for profit.10 Reply
It's been proven that the earth naturally cycles through periods of ice ages and high temperatures, long before we existed on this planet.
And is it really the worst thing in the world if we go extinct? Other species go extinct all the time. Why not just accept it?

Most people are ignorant not stupid, that includes all politicians and a great many climate 'scientist'.
They only really are claiming credentialism as justification for our beleive as if we didn't witness the abuse of such credentialism in real life and on TV on a regular basis. Regardless the failure to make accurate predictions by said climate 'scientist' decade after decade does make it irresponsible to continue to beleive any of their future predictions.
Still left unspoken yet of central important to the question of Earth's climate is in fact Earth's current Holocene inter-glacial Ice age Climate. A period that has already lasted 11 thousand years among inter-glacial that average around 10 thousand.
In fact we are not even in a particularity warm part of this or any other inter-glacial. Like it or not regardless of how much CO2 we release this inter-glacial will end plunging the Earth into anther glaciation with mile High ice descending from the poles crushing everything above the 49th parallel.

+1 yI have a few points and questions for you then.
1. Define "climate change".
2. Define the SPECIFIC causes of that change.
3. What SPECIFIC actions can be taken to actually stop climate change?
4. WHY does EVERY celebrity who clamors abut climate change, ALWAYS take private jets, large yachts, large gas guzzling SUV'S (with chauffeur), to any world summit on climate change? In addition, WHY do they ALL live in homes that are 3X-20X LARGER than average people, with those homes requiring excessive amounts of fossil-based energy to heat and cool?
5. Their actions, reactions, and lifestyle PROVES to me, "climate change", is nothing more than an animistic secular religion where the transfer of American wealth is made to other countries in the name of "saving the planet". China and Russia are considered as "developing" nations, under this banner. You're worshipping the creation, not the Creator.
There's not ANY specific actions taken that actually PROVE we've made an adjustment to "climate change". You have an ambiguous name (climate change) that has ambiguous goals, requiring the US expend TRILLIONS of taxpayer money to solve a non-existent problem. Prove me wrong.
01 Reply- 1 y
Well "change" is like day temperature is hot around 80 degrees then CHANGES to less than 80 after sun set.
It is supposed to change. "Change" from the situation until now of change would be SAME temperature 24 hours. 👨🎓😉
12.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Relax, kiddo. Bitching isn't going to help and no - science is largely the CAUSE of most climate damage- not it's solution.
A lot of the pollution and damage is down to science and technology not giving a shit. Just like the tobacco companies didn't. But now that they have been caught - it's all "whoa, the planet is 3 minutes from midnight!"
You fuckers caused it, not joe public, but you expect people to change their lives, while you continue your crazy experiments at public cost!
The truth is different though. The planet was here before humans were - it's going to be here when humans are gone.

Even then most scientists only agree to take the most moderate position. What the political mob chooses not to point out is the fact that the Earth is currently locked in an ICE AGE!The ongoing Quaternary Ice age started millions of years ago leading to large scale climate disruption and shifts that probably opened the door for Mankind to evolve in response.
To the extent Global warming is real it is a VERY Good thing that should be encouraged. However even the UN's own reports conclude even if we burned the remaining 90% of Earth's fossil fuels we could at best delay the next 5 Glacial cycles.Mankind will need to come up with a new solution to the Ice age problem within the next few thousand to few hundred thousand years depending upon how effective our use of green house gasses are.

1 yThe same reason people don't believe the boy who cried wolf.
Back in 2001 to 2008 scientists "forecast" by 2012 and by 2016 etc. We all saw they were wrong and
that news networks only were trying to make a sensation!
So that is what is happening now too. Lie for click bait and make a hoax.
If you are age 35 you were old enough to understand the forecast then
and see it was just a hoax!

About "will be irreversible" we already passed that year without drastic prevention so too late.
I think it is a result of a disbelief in science and propaganda put forth by the oil industry and the politicians in their pocket. Do you think the Koch’s want alternative energy? They have pumped millions into the campaigns of conservative, pro-oil politicians.
Even if fossil fuels were not contributing to climate change, wouldn’t it be best to use less oil by finding alternative forms of energy and not be held hostage to OPEC?00 Reply- 1.2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.

It's not just a small fringe minority of engineers trying to profit, it's renowned officials in their 70s, 80s, and 90s shortly before dying, what would be the point to lie about this? Speaking about the suppression of zero point energy devices..
