+1 yFor the same reason the mastery levels are 200 ELO points lower: tournament-level chess pieces are made of solid lead, or possibly depleted uranium, and it's unfair to be able to expect women to pick them up and move them as easily as men can.
That sentence sounds incredibly idiotic, right? The truth is even stupider: it's so women don't get discouraged and quit, because we need more women at the highest levels because... well, no one's ever been able to give me a legitimate reason why. And encouraging them to develop their skills and improve their playing is just "misogynistic", somehow.
If I was a female chess player, I'd be completely unable to take FIDE seriously because of this (I say that because I'm NOT a female chess player, and I still can't, and I don't think that would change my assessment). But I'd also be damned insulted- it's literally being completely open about your tokenism, and not just implying, but outright stating that women are not only not good enough to compete, but not emotionally mature enough to accept that some people are better than them at certain things. For all the decrying I hear of "the participation trophy generation", this is it being forced.
For an added bonus, they kicked out Maria and Anna Muzychuk, sisters who are both grandmasters (high enough to be real, even if they aren't given the formal title), because they refused to sign a letter calling for Russian and Belarusan players to be banned. Because it's TOTALLY the responsibility of chess players to manage their government's horrible decisions. I mean, at least Paul Morphy and Bobby Fischer were entertaining in their insanity; this is just being asinine.

Because male and female IQs are distributed differently. Let's say about 64% of women are between 85 and 115 IQs, about 15% are between 115 and 130 IQs, and only about 3% are above 130 IQs. Men, in contrast would have about 50% of IQs between 85 and 115, 20% of IQs between 115 and 130, and 5% of IQs above 130.
TLDR: men have more extremes in intelligence while women have less deviation in intelligence. Basically, there are more male geniuses and idiots than there are women. There are far more extremely skilled male chess players than there are femeale players of the same skill level, and there are really no female chess players as good as the top 1% of men.20 Reply

+1 yThe reason for a gender split in chess is to encourage more women to compete as men greatly outweigh women at all levels of competitive chess. Sometimes a woman playing in an absolute tournament can easily feel out of place if there is a lack of female presence. Women were not allowed to compete until 1937. So, the women's division was created to encourage women to compete. It has absolutely nothing to do with the intelligence like you are implying.
For someone who proclaims themself to be smarter than most people, I am surprised you didn't already know that.

Nothing, apart from interest. Thats like asking why there are more men into cars than women.
- +1 y
Nothing is stopping them, but there's not much interest in the game from women. Unless you're born with a real "gift" for the game, for lack of a better word, chess is an extremely difficult game to master.

@loveslongnails Exactly, it's kind of like what we see in ballet. Nothing stopping men form doing it, there just isn't much interest in it from men.
- +1 y
I don't even understand why anyone would do that to their own feet! LOL
- +1 y
@loveslongnails Well male dancers dont really dance on pointe, but it's for same reason pitchers destroy their shoulders, football players blow out their knees, backs and experience so much head trauma
- +1 y
Money? LOL Ok, ok, I know you mean for the "love of it", but you REALLY have to love ballet and dancing to make a career of it. The average ballerina or dancer doesn't make very much, and highest paid prima ballerina is lucky to break $250. The "average" NFL football player makes $2.7 million annually, and you can get knee replacements for free! :)
- +1 y
@loveslongnails well the same applies for professional sports. They really have to love it to make a career of it. The same concept applies.
- +1 y
Some athletes love it, some know they're just really good at it and do it for the money, in my opinion.
- +1 y
@loveslongnails the same can he said for any sport or profession honestly

Thanks for MHO
Because the decision makers seems to think women are not emotionally mature or with enough mental strength to support playing chess against men and believe it would cause them nervousness

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yWhile men and women have the same average IQ scores, there’s more variance among male scores. More women of average intelligence, more men and the top and bottom end.
In order to play at a high level you have to be good at thinking logically, strategically, noticing patterns.
Most chess players, in fact most highly intelligent people, are on the autism spectrum. Including the women. Beyond a certain point of intelligence there tends to be a trade-off between increased ability to solve logical problems vs social skill. There are also a lot more autistic men than autistic women.

This makes sense. I ALWAYS had the feeling that there's something 'strange' about playing chess :)
Anonymous(36-45)+1 yBecause decades and decades of male colonialist oppression has caused their brains to have an unfair advantage and, plus, if a woman of playing against a dominating male, he will have an unfair advantage over her because of all the abuse that the male population has caused to females over the centuries so it is actually more fair and equitable to just give her two queens instead of just one to make up for the Queen that men have slaughtered over the centuries.

Men are more likely to be extremely smart or extremely stupid, women tend to be average.

30 ReplyBecause they're not equally smart on the high end. We're only equally smart on average, not in the extremes. Put simply men have more geniuses and idiots than women do, so it balances out on average.
We have the women's groups, for the same reason we have women's groups in football and society has to use politics to encourage the existence of it. This reason is the fact most women wouldn't compete at all if it wasn't made easy for them. Same as the army, they can't cut the mustered using the men's standard, so we lowered the standard for women to make it easier for them to get in. And hopefully the enemy army in the same token will go easy in them and try to shoot them less often.
In other words, the short answer is equality is just one of those lies you're told as a child, and what you're actually experiencing is the modern day equivalent of chivalry, which is otherwise known as feminism.00 Reply1.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. - 1.2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
+1 yDespite the "Queen's Gambit" even at the extremes in chess, the best men far exceed the best women. If I were female my current rating would make me 32nd in the USA. The Top US female, 400 ELO points higher than I am, if male would be #77, and the #2 female would not even break the male Top 100.

More clearly, I am just under the Top 3% of males.

Nowwwww... what about transgender people, one may wonder :D
Is it ''fair'' to let a former 'man' compete in the 'women's' league?

Its like asking a female boxer can't take on a male boxer in the heavyweight division.
00 Reply1.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. There is one politician in my country who when discussing "gender equality" always uses an argument that "among 100 best chess players in the world there's only one woman".

Same as in the United States, as I explained above. Only one woman is rated high enough to crack the US male Top 100, and the distance is ELO between her and Hikaru and Fabiano at the top is more than it is between her and me, and I do not come within sniffing distance of the US male Top 1000.

+1 yI wasn't aware of that but I see it as a good thing because it doesn't create competition between men and women such a feminism has done. Competition between men and women isn't natural nor was it meant to be.

10 Reply553 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. i have never witnessed a Chess tournament but is there a winner take all match with the men's champ face the woman's champ?

No. There is not a woman alive who would be able to win a Championship Match against Magnus or any of the other top players. Judit Polgar at her peak might have had a chance to win a game or two, but not a match.
