I heard yesterday that if you live in California, and you have proof that your ancestors were Slaves, you will get $800,000.00

+1 yI heard it was $50,000, but super legit question here did California even HAVE slavery? And what about someone who can prove that their great grandmother was a slave in Mississippi? First, WHO GETS the money? I mean she may have a LOT of living progeny, what with children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren… do they EACH get the money? Second, why are California tax payers on the hook for a crime that occurred in Mississippi? Oh and one more, what if a man truly deserves the money, but his white wife divorces him the second the check clears? Is she entitled to HALF under California’s confiscatory community property divorce laws? If so, why are white people benefitting from the wages of slavery, AGAIN? I think there may be a LOT of “what if’s”that California has not thought about yet!

I think they have to have lived in California for a certain time period. Or else they would have everyone moving here from the South. I have no idea what all the crack heads in LA are going to do with that much money.
Asker+1 y@Daniela1982 can Black peoples move to California to get the money?

As Daniella wrote, you must have lived in California for a certain period of time before an African American is eligible to apply for it, if it passes. You know I think it would be available online for you to read it yourself, let me check… Okay so according to California’s Attorney General’s Office, there is NO monetary award going to African Americans living in California, this was a false internet rumor. And a quick google of “California’s reparations act” took me to https://oag.ca.gov/ab3121 Where the full text of the bill is available. Right now there exists ONLY a commission to INVESTIGATE the systematic harms that have come to African Americans as a direct consequence of slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow laws. The final recommendation is due in 2023, but a link to their 500 page interim review is already available for viewing at the web address above.
Asker+1 y@CrazyGirl2 I am so incredibly impressed by the way you investigated this issue and came up with a great answer.

How easy is it to prove an ancestor was a slave? Potentially an ancestor who was a slave could have thousands of descendants. Do they each get 800 thou or do the thousand descendants get $800 each? Does the ancestor have to have been a slave in California?

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yCalifornia, like some other states, has a task force studying the issue of reparations. These would be recommendations that will be made to the legislature for consideration. Nothing is concrete at this point. Although California was technically a free state, slavery apparently still happened up to the civil war. The task force is studying the state’s role and is still deciding who would be eligible. Descendants would likely have to prove their lineage to qualify. Cash payments are but one form of compensation being considered. Tuition and housing grants are others ideas. I know this is a sore subject with some people but reparations were owed to former slaves. There’s no question about that. Compensating their descendants is more of a symbolic gesture at this point but it’s a debt long overdue that should be paid….. along with an official apology. The fact that federal and state governments have swept this under the rug for 150+ years doesn’t absolve them. Right is right.

Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yThen hell I want reparations as a Native American!!! Hell let’s all get reparations a lot of us had ancestors who were slaves. You know who should pay part of the reparations? The people who originally enslaved their own people lol people just want free things. Even if we got that money most of us would blow it on stupid things cause we don’t know how to make it work for us. I’m buying me a $500,000 gold chain lol

+1 yIt will get struck down in the federal courts. A racial entitlement is only permissible to remedy the government’s own discrimination, not societal discrimination. It cannot provide race-based “remedies that are ageless in their reach into the past, and timeless in their ability to affect the future.” (See Richmond v. J. A. Croson Co., 488 U. S. 469, 497 (1995)). Reparations for slavery would be just such an improper “remedy.”

Unless you've personally been the victim of slavery that money is better spent elsewhere.

No they did not as it's unconstitutional. Meaning, the president doesn't have the authority to make that decision. The Congress is in control of the purse aka The National Treasury. Nancy Pelosi, the outgoing speaker of the house even said it during Biden's presidential campaign when the subject was brought up. She clearly spelled it out that the president does not have the authority to do that.
Knowing a majority of the people would not know this nor would they research it at all as well taking into consideration historically people vote with their wallets; it was a tactic used to win over voters. Specifically those with student debt.
As far as reparations go, it's a ridiculous notion. If there was any real concern about slavery, people would be attempting to put an end to it. The slave trade is STILL up and running in Africa just as it has since the 1500s. Though some seem to believe it's more important to get a check than stop the suffering.
That being said, if such an absurd thing as reparations we're to happen, it would be more logical to start at the front of the line.
First demand payments from Africa whom sold the slaves.
Second demand payment from the Portuguese who purchased the slaves from Africa and transported them to the Americas.
Personally my family as well of millions of others weren't even in this country yet at that time. If that's not enough to show this as completely unjust, as a tax paying citizen of this country that wasn't born anywhere close to the time of slaves, I should not be held responsible or should I be held responsible for that debt.
