San Franciso reperation board is proposing that long time, black residents be given 5 million US dollars as reparations for slavery. Do you think this is justified or excessive?

According to US Census Bureau, there are 50k black people in San Francisco. This means that if this goes forward, it will cost the entire country 250 billion dollars.

i don't think reparations is the way to go for an entire group of people but just trying to improve their circumstances in terms of education, employment etc is a good idea. I'm from the UK so we would go broke repaying all the wrongs we've done and we've already got a shitty economic situation, so i think just giving foreign aid and fostering good relations with all the countries we've fucked over is good for now. And maybe giving back a few things from the museums...
it's a slippery slope
but i also saw the video from CNN (?) and the lady talking about if we're paying reparations then we need to go all the way back to those selling their own people off as slaves

Nope. You don't deserve money as reparations for a situation neither you nor your parents or grandparents have experienced. Not even for slavery. Nobody else in the USA gets reparations for being enslaved or being victims of genocide.

Sure they deserve it, if they earn it themselves... such as starting businesses, or getting some nice CEO job, or be elected to a office where they get rich like most politicians do.

However it won't cost the entire country anything, if San Francisco wants it, they'll be the ones paying it out. The US isn't paying it, the city is... they only have a budget of 12 billion so should be fun to watch how they plan to pay it and keep up city services.

Of course the whole idea is racist, could you imagine if they were planning on giving it to white people the outrage and racist comments.

It's one way to reduce the wealthy population of California. They will just all move away and take their wealth with them. The Blacks will be the only one's left in the state. They'll have a lot of room to themselves, but they will be stuck with a giant state debt from their reparation payments that they will have to pay themselves... I believe in reparations for things AFTER slavery. Specifically, older black people who lived through Jim Crow laws, shit in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, etc. But everybody that was affected directly by slavery is long gone. Nothing will ever repair that.

Newsom didn’t even give the gas relief payments to all residents who actually needed it. Lower income and SSI disability and war veterans, people too poor to pay taxes, never saw a dime. It is a good idea to only poor black people or middle class so they can get out of poverty. Maybe not 5M but each should get 1M dollars that will be enough to get them out of poverty. Even biracial people too. If you are half black then you will still get money. Half of $1M dollars

No I don't think they deserve the money. If they deserve it based on what happened to their ancestors, how about giving them the cheapest ticket possible to wherever their ancestors came from? Unless their ancestors moved willingly, I would think they would have prefered to stay were they lived before they became slaves.
