For example a person with schizophrenia stabbed you in the back only once and you survived the attack but they never got charged and never got sent to prison because of their illness.

That depends. How long were they held for psychological evaluation? I assume if they didn't go to prison they were at least held for that. Take the case of John Hinckley. They released him but they also did it after He and Reagan both died.
