If people can choose their gender, then why do some people get so upset about "appropriating" ethnicity?

Some people were very upset when Elizabeth Warren claimed to be Native American, or when that woman in the NW was leading some black organization while claiming to be AA.

But if you can choose your gender, then why can't you choose your ethnicity? Gender has a lot more of a biological basis than race.

I actually don’t know and I don’t even know why people get offended when others embrace their culture. They don’t like it when people are racist to them but they also don’t like it when people want to enjoy their traditions. What do they like?


I’m Arab and I love seeing people enjoy our culture. Embrace our food, oud perfume, caftans, abayas, gold jewellery, belly dancing….. it’s fun and I like seeing other enjoy it. I don’t think it’s exclusive for us only. And it definitely better than people being racist towards us and isolating us.
