The income is either taxable or exempt in the tax year it was earned and paid. The military usually calculates tax exempt amounts and lists the adjusted amounts on service members’ W-2s in the taxable amount block. For example, you may have gross pay of $62,000 listed in block 1, underneath the taxable amount might be listed as $48,500. If there’s that much disparity that would mean the exemption was figured in. Best to direct your questions in your particular case to your military finance office. There are some FAQs listed in the DFAS MyPay website. Don’t know if that would help.
