The real question is are we defining 'intelligent' incorrectly, if the people wee deem 'smart' are soo failing at the most basic requirement of life as to be worthy of a Darwin award?

Ultimately intelligence is just a claim to be better at making choices to advance your interest. If your 'superior' choices lead to your non-existence, and thus the collapse of all interest genetically then how is it that you are 'intelligent'?

Nature is perhaps ruthless in being the ultimate arbitrator of truth in that it cares about results, not whatever lies we tell ourselves matter.

It is still on going and what decide the future of the human race is very much what decide whom among us is most successful in having and raising the next generation.

We see today in "modern education" in the western world a clear demonstration of draw back of the ability to learn and thus be "Raised".
In that those who have "learned" the lessons choose have gone on to become the least successful so self-destructive those lessons had been in the grand scheme of things.

This of course is why intelligent life soo capable is also soo rare in the history of life on this planet and probably all others. We can change for the worse too quickly and catastrophically.

That most people choose to spend $300,000 dollars on their children over a lifetime in which they will earn many times as much does not mean that they had to.
Indeed the fact that many around the world cannot and did not is proof there was never any such requirement.

Likewise it is NOT helpfull to site such lifetime numbers to people who's attention span for planning extends not much beyond a few years.

FYI there are only 735 billionaires in the USA, if that is all the new 87,000 IRS agents were after then we should have more than enough to act as personal tax body guards working 8 hour shift as to insure said billionaires are paying federal taxes on every actions even in their sleep...

If we expand the search to millionaires of which there are oddly enough 87,565 households we should have enough additional Tax employees as to assign one full time to every single such household. @monorprise actually no we’re are a lot smarter then they were back in 10,000 BC. Given we living in hours we have car’s technology. Agriculture allowed human to have more time during the day to innovate animal husbandry was another great advancement in human civilization. Religious came in an allowed humans to form bigger tribes until we started building cities based around our religious icons. We started to reason and grow more and more as humans until we have reach the second half of the 20th century mainly the 1970 own ward. Then we started getting stupid again
