How do we stop mass shootings?

There was another mass shooting on Saturday. This time at a birthday party. Four were murdered.

Conservatives have proposed arming teachers and staffing schools with armed guards to make them "safer". Should there be armed guards at birthday parties?

Mental health care needs to be improved, like @aerissa_jade said the problem isn't the guns, it is society.

My medical insurance I have had, didn't even offer decent mental health on it. Maybe that is the solution, require medical insurance to also cover Mental health care.

What I had was a $100 dollar co-pay per visit for mental health and limited to 10 times a year, that is simply unaffordable. At least medical doctors is a $35 co-pay.

I see no way to stop mass shootings, as there are millions of legal gun owners who have and never will kill anyone with them.

Plus various laws restrict guns from going into various places and people have to leave them in their cars and then they get stolen. Those that steal them have already shown they don't care about the law and is likely to use them.

While the Dadeville shooting, last I checked, there is no cause given it appears to be done with handguns.

It is time that people ignore the tool and try to get to the root of the problem to fix it.

No one just decides they are going to go on a rampage at short notice like that. There is always a trigger, something... it could be a fight from a long standing feud, or more often than not. They decided to end their life, and take out as many people as they can on the way.

Mass shooters don't expect to get away with it and continue living... they have decided to end their life.

That is what we need to address, the root cause of why people want to end their life and stop that.

Until society wants to fix that, there is nothing that can be done to stop deaths by guns.

Mass shootings are basically suicide by cop so let's look at suicide prevention for some guidance.

Community outreach is a positive step. Feel like a person with purpose and dignity. Create purpose and means to a fulfilling life. No man is an island meant to be isolated.

From their create trusted bonds with family or with found family. With the hope of getting help and helping others.

Then we can have things like 3 day waiting period on gun sale. Someone that is in a crisis peak will change in 3 days saving lifes.

There are more tools for preventing the most common gun violence being suicide but are effective for all gun violence. If we prioritize the message on suicide angle we could have better support.

I disagree with the waiting period, due to undue burden and cost.

In rural America here one will have to drive 200+ miles to attend a gun show (sometimes 300+) or a gun store.

Who is going to reimburse them for missed work and extra undue cost (gas, etc) to make a second trip to pick it up 3 days later? After all it is a right... and if we did that to someone wanting to vote, people would shit themselves.

I know people think of it as a short 10 min drive to a sporting goods store in a city, and maybe if people live in cities they should have a waiting period but not those who live in towns under say 500 people.

The undue burden and cost of all gun suicide on society is greater cost then protecting gun rights at this point. It's killing ourselves and our loved ones faster then needing protection.
i really don't care about some ruff neck spending an extra few days in town that's comparable to jury dudy a civil duty. That would be equally legally enforced

If someone buys 50 guns a year, you simply said they have a civic duty to exercise a right and travel an extra 500 miles for each gun, all undue extra costs that is not right or fair.

Nobody is saying much about the latest shooting but if I was to hazard a guess I would say an unregistered firearm was involved. Getting caught with an unregistered firearm used to come with a mandatory jail term but the liberal DAs decided that since most of the offenders were gang bangers the law was racist so they decided not to enforce it. If people want to be safe they will stop putting these people back in office and vote them out. They want to vote for these idiots then they have to live (or die) with the consequences.>

I mean.. While I could go in here and talk about social changes and such there is actually a change that was very notable in how effective it was in recent American history itself. The Assault Weapon ban of 1994.

The ban itself was incredibly flawed, yes. But it was notably still effective in reducing mass shootings. With some better forethought put into the ban and better application you could have even better results. Of course, this won't stop it entirely, but its a good start and one that we already know works.

Trying to stop mass shootings is silly, you should try to stop mass murder in general (or maybe even just murder overall). Taking guns out of the hands of people will lessen SOME mass shootings but won't lessen mass killing. The strict gun control laws of France, for example, didn't stop a guy from driving his truck into hundreds of people, killing 86 people and injuring 434 (Nice, France truck attack, if you're curious). So if you abolished guns, and someone wanted to kill a large amount of people, why would your gun control stop them? There are countless other ways to kill masses of people, or people in general.

All you are actually accomplishing is preventing any actual change for the better. While it would be incredible to just magically stop all crime forever, that is not very realistic and a better way to go about things is to identify problem areas and start from there. Point is, mass shootings is a problem, how do we solve it?

There is also historic precedent in US history to show that gun control works. Specifically, the incredibly flawed assault weapons ban of 1994 which while being a piece of garbage legislation was still a step in the right direction and significantly lowered the amount of mass shootings.

Again, if your intent with gun control is to lessen the amount of death, and someone wanted to kill large amounts of people, would they be like "well damn, I don't have easy access to guns. And, ironically, your argument is flawed, assuming you're a reasonable person that is.

Assuming your intent is to cause less death, not just just change the tool used for murderers to murder, pointing out "gun control caused less mass shootings" (even if we assuming it's causation) that doesn't account for would-be mass shooters instead mass murdering with other tools.

Here is a simple example:

If there are 8 mass shootings and 2 mass vehicle slaughterings every year, and then we pass gun control laws, then the next year there are 4 mass shootings and 6 mass vehicle slaughterings, you can confidently say "look, we caused less mass shooting!" But you cannot confidently say "we caused less murder." The 4 would-be mass shooters just opted to use a vehicle instead.

So you stating "look, the statistics show that gun control lead to less mass shooting" does not mean it lead to less murder.

If I had the option of changing the "tool" that mass murderers had to use then that sounds like a victory to me. That is quite a lot of control and its easy to direct them towards less dangerous options like bombs or vehicles. Something that can in turn also be regulated to further impact their ability. Gun Control is just a small piece in a larger puzzle for stopping crime. It is not meant to singlehandedly save humankind from crime, just deal with a very specific problem which it provably does according to historical example.

Also, there is a huge drop-off in the number of people who follows through with something with each extra step they have to take. Guns in America is the easy option, available to pretty much everyone and requires very little effort or money. Cars are more difficult and bombs even more difficult. Each extra step makes it more unreliable such as the amount of bomb attempts that fail and fewer people will actually go through with it. This is just fact.
