Everyone WANTS 'gun control' until you control THEIR guns.
Every gun has a 'history' from mfg. to present; it is JUST a 'tool' with potential LETHAL use. Accountability is NOT the same as societal RESPONSIBILITY.
Dis-empowered adolescents and the mentally-unstable rarely carry claw hammers, NO Hollywood "see what I got, FEAR me" 'peer prestige'. Even the toughest bully 'respects' a rabid dog.
ATF Transfer Form 4473 is the 'birth certificate' for every original gun purchaser. MOST states have contributory negligence 'Accessory Before the Act' criminal & civil $$$ liability statutes; FEW States Attorneys EVER CHARGE apathetic owners. Imagine what a highly-publicized prosecution of parental negligence resulting in prison time and the punitive loss of one's home would shake the public psyche!
I'm a former Class III FFL dealer, retired municipal police officer and an owner of a baker's dozen personal firearms... ALL under my personal locked control ALONE, for over half a century. ;)
Some school shooters, like Kip Kinkel. killed their parents to get their guns. Some raised their kids with guns. The Unabomber didn't use guns to kill. You can buy a gun underground or on the Dark Web. You will never be able to get rid of guns if someone wants one bad enough just as people can get drugs. That shows how well the war on drugs has been successful. And drugs kill more people than guns.
First, let me say we're on the same side no matter who we are; nobody wants to see innocent people (especially kids) shot by a mentally deranged human. Might be in the minority but I don't think you can actually just *ban* firearms. Even buybacks. I mean theoretically even if you were to try, how are you gonna get the guns? There have been nearly 400 million firearms sold, and you think you're going to be able to go door-to-door and take them? Nobody will give them up. Secondly, if someone is willing to kill, they're willing to also commit a crime to illegally own a weapon. I think the actual solution comes down to security. Shooters pick the easiest targets, and unfortunately, schools don't usually have the best security funding so people are able to just barge right through the door. The US needs better deterrents rather than just bans.
Glad to see you focus on what we have in common. I appreciate that. Being Canadian I have a different perspective. Our schools have little security yet shootings are nowhere near as frequent. Why? We have stronger gun control. Obviously they are not banned but it is much harder for someone who is not law abiding and mentally stable to get one, especially if it is of a type designed to kill humans rather than for hunting (eg. concealable, high rate of fire). Also you can't just walk around with them wherever you go.
@GrantArmstrong You bring up an excellent point. This is more talking about the underlying root cause of the shootings. In my opinion, the main root cause isn't the fact that guns are legal, it's the underlying mental epidemic the United States has. Out of all the top-income countries, the US has the highest self-reporting rate of mental illness by a decent margin (and now imagine all the people who either don't know or don't say anything). I love Canada, as I myself am a person of Canadian heritage, and I'm thankful Canada doesn't deal with the same problems the Americans do. But I don't believe Canada's firearm laws are the reason they don't experience what the US is. Many states also outright outlaw open-carrying a firearm of any kind (such as Florida, where the Parkland shooting and Orlando night club shooting took place. And New York, where the supermarket shooting took place). Also, further evidence for this is the fact that 60% of all deaths caused by a firearm in the US annually are self-inflicted (i. e. suicide). Of course, a mental illness epidemic isn't something we can cure overnight, but I think the US needs to implement better deterrents like security to deter it from happening, and I personally believe focusing on just "banning" and "prohibiting" is distracting people from a real solution.
*also note the majority of non-self-inflicted gun deaths in the United States are caused by gang violence. The shootings I was referencing (as I think everyone else is) are "mass shootings".
@GrantArmstrong I assume you can get a gun on the black market virtually anywhere if you want one bad enough. If Canada has fewer shootings they must be doing something right. The problem is not gunsd but the mental instability of the shooters. The way things are going with Biden's government, you will probably be seeing more shootings, not less. As it is now, if you work in a fast food place, the odds of you being shot is more than in a school.
@DubiousIntentions "if you want one bad enough" is the key here. Not many mentally unstable people have the wherewithal to obtain a gun if we make it difficult enough. Canada is doing something right: we are regulating firearms.
@GrantArmstrong You can make it as difficult as you want, but as with drugs, you can get them easily enough even though there are tougher controls on them then there are with guns.
As it has been seen, someone can kill several people with a knife just as fast as a gun. It is very hard to defend yourself against someone with a razor-sharp knife. You really need to do more about mental health problems. Health insurance doesn't cover all it takes to get someone the correct help and visits needed to do it with a doctor. Jobs today do not provide benefits, such as health insurance. People are stressed and pissed by what is going on in the world. They are not given paid time off to deal with their problems, so they tend to bottle everything up like a bottle of Coke until someone drops a Mentos in their mouth and they blow up. Just look at all the incidences at fast food places. Look at all the people killing their children. How many people use cars to mow people down? You have to get at the root of the problems or no laws are going to matter. If they can't get a gun they will use any means they can to do someone harm.
To the people who disagree, what are your ideas to prevent school shootings besides take away guns. That is like telling felons they can't possess guns. They can get them any time they want, and are found in possession of firearms all the time.
Metal detector checks and one cop, or at the very least, security officer at each school. You hardly ever heard about shootings at airports. If they can make those safe, no fuckimg reason our children aren’t safe other than the fact they don’t make it a fucking priority

It would be very difficult to reduce the supply of weapons in the US. Still, the only way to reduce school shootings is to make it more difficult to obtain guns. There should be regular testing to possess weapons. Testing would include mental health, safe handling and storage. As you said, there should be a demonstrated need. The government should tax purchases the way we tax other vices -- at a level that would fund addressing the problems guns create.
Some will argue that criminals will always be able to get guns and that's true. But, career criminals have nothing to gain by killing civilians. They certainly aren't committing school shootings.
Career criminals are not all mentally ill, or pissed off at the world either as shooters are.
First thing they do is take down the 'Gun Free Zone' signs, they are an invitation for those who want shoot up a school and instead put up signs that say 'Staff Members in this school are armed and are willing to use deadly force if needed' the Staff Members need not be armed but it changes the perception of the school from being a 'Soft Target' to a one that will be defended and is a 'Safe Space' for kids.
Then you ‘Harden’ the school buildings, limit the number of entrances/exits when the opens/closes for the day, when the school is in session reduce the entrances/exits to one which is physically hardened and is designed as a holding area.
The consider allowing teachers/staff to concealed carry or have firearms in lockers in the staff-room, school office, or another secure place, and all willing teachers/staff trained in their use, and have a workable response plan along with sheltering in place.
Thing is my country has a fairly high level of guns too but you don't see us shooting around at school do you?
The gun control is not the answer. The answer is opportunity to use it. Keep your weapons in tight locks. And raise the license limit from 18 to 25.
And people who use guns and kill people should understand that you're not someone special. If you want to use guns, go fight in a war somewhere like Ukraine, or Palestine or Kashmir. You can play heroes over there.
Ukraine is a good spot because people will get all paid ticket and salary as foreign fighters.
Just stop being so damn strict. Kids want to do school shootings bc they get treated like shit by other kids and no one helps them. Then teachers are being assholes and saying that their lives don't matter and the only thing that matters is that stupid class. Then when they punish us for trying, but not completing. It's bullshit. Teachers should accept partial work and still give them the points they got right. But it teaches kids that if they want better grades, they have to do more. But they don't get 0s even though they filled out 1/2 the assignment. If they got that 1/2 all correct. Give them those points. If they don't show all the work, but got the right answer, give them partial points. If they miscalculated on a problem, help them understand what the did wrong. Don't just say 0 and no explination.
The elementary school shooter was not bullied by the little kids who he killed. Too many excuses for me. People are bullied all the time and don’t become school shooters. No one to blame but the shooter.
@Alchemiszt oh yeah and the majority of other people this happens to who don’t become school shooters are just gems? Wow y’all sound really dumb.
It's not an excuse. Obviously murder is wrong, and murderers are bad. But it is one of the things that most often causes it.
Bullies don't value the kid's lives, they could be driving them to suicide and they don't give a shit because it makes them feel good. So why would the kid's want to value the bullies lives? Especially since empathy often isn't fully developed by that point.
That doesn't make it justified in any way, I'm not excusing it, (murder bad, yes) but that is one of the many causes. And, of course, some shooters are just bloodthirsty, but it would probably happen less if people weren't so shitty.
You understand I'm not excusing it, right? I'm NOT trying to make you okay with literal murder, I'm NOT trying to make you like murderers, I'm NOT even trying to make you hate them less, nothing like that. They're NOT good people by that point. The non-murderers are who I'm trying to help.
And, yes, many people are bullied and don't murder anyone, but not everyone is so stable. And I don't believe bullying is excused either, some go out of their way to make a person's life a living hell. Bullying can't be stopped completely, neither can anything else humans do, but it has gotten less shitty, and I'm positive it can continue. Either way, I do not believe murder is okay in any way. I am NOT defending people who've committed murder. Understand?
Have better human beings. But that won't happen, because hard work, lotlyalty and honesty aren't rewarded anymore in American society. We have to reward and protect deadbeats so we can fill government quotas and not live in fear of name calling.🙄American society is all about pointing the finger at someone else... while closing the door and doing the exact same thing when no one's looking, then getting on social media and crying for victims so we don't get the finger pointed at us. That's the truth... and truth... is another thing Americans are allergic to.
How are the shooters getting into the school? Where is the cop at the door? Why is there more than one door that opens from the outside? Why is it that often times the shooter was banned from the school? How come nobody can connect the dots until it's too late?
By actually banning possession of any firearms, except for law enforcement & citizens if they own a-need-to-be-protected asset like a jewelry shop or a secluded land. With them undergoing maximum mental health tests and check ups. As well as multiplying the number of police men & officers.
Enough already...
Criminals will still get firearms.
@LiamJHayden Like in the black market? If certain individuals in the government are corrupt then yes. That's why everyone in management should be subjected to morality standards test. It will at least keep them at bay as possible as it is.
Won't work. And it's unconstitutional.
@LiamJHayden lol Then alter the constitution? Or then more people will keep dying!
@pers0n That's why everyone there needs to have their standards checked before taking charge of anything administrative.
@pers0n A group of sane ethical people will do XD Though it may not matter much when PotUS himself is immoral. *cough*bush*cough*
No, criminals will still get them. Heck, I'm a hack but I can build one in my garage if I wanted to.
@LiamJHayden It will at maximum reduce the amount of gun-wielding thugs out there greatly. By actually implementing the new laws and enforcing them. After what you just said, you terrify me so to speak! XP
No, it won't. All it will do is disarm law-abiding citizens and make them easier prey for those thugs.
As long as there is a political agenda to take guns away there will be lunatics out to influence those politics by shooting up schools. If you get rid of the political agenda to take guns away the lunatics will eventually stop trying.
There use to be a policy of not negotiating with terrorists for good reason. If you do, they will continue over and over to negotiate your rights away.
The lesson: Don't be a fool and give in to terrorists.
They can't eliminate school shootings but they sure as hell can do a better job to reduce them
Maybe less to no guns lol
Besides of that a better education for sure!!! and more smart people cause damn you americans are different lol, more people with empathy etc cause as far as I know Canadians also have Guns but a less crime rate tho
Smart guns need to be invented. Smart guns that will not be able to fire bullets unless given permission by a WiFi/Bluetooth signal at a gun range outside of cities.
Ideas like that could easily stop all shootings.
Move all scto online. It worked during the pandemic. Now we don't have to heat and cool school which will allow to give teachers a huge raise. You can still have after school program and sports and use the bus system for that. Problem solved.
Put metal detectors in the appropriate schools/areas.
Cops in every school. Build schools with no windows. It would also help to save Tax Payer Dollars if they quit building schools and allow teachers to teach online to students from their homes. Teaching from home kills 2 birds with 1 Stone. No School Shootings and less strain on the budget since no schools would need to be built.
My opinion will be biased since I'm pro 2A. Keep that in mind.
In my OPINION nothing can be done to completely stop mass shootings in the US. Anyone deranged enough to buy a gun and commit an act of terrorism will go to any lengths to do so. 3D printing their own, importing them, smuggling them, etc.
Instead of disarming the law abiding citizens, we should put more money into mental health and check in on our neighbors from time to time to see if they're doing alright.
Arm the teachers, have them trained to use protective weapons.
Not too much but I mean, beefing up security is a possibility, amongst better mental help care overall.
it's a result of the breakdown of family, values and society. you can trace it back through the decades. there's no easy fix for that
Maybe hire retired Special Forces personnel as school security. Otherwise, I am loath to ban personal ownership and thus do things like leave a single mother or the elderly unarmed when an assailant tries a home invasion.
You change America's mindset. Until you do that you'll always have a problem.
Americans feel they need to shoot people to be respected
Mental health awareness and real effort in the country would help
Try to make the weirdos part of the group. Talk to the kids find out who the fucked up ones are. We had a kid who used to pretend he was squishing peoples heads all day with his fingers.
Something like that take him to be psychiatrically evaluated.
No one should have to go out of their way to make a “weirdo” part of the group. Forced fake friendship like you are trying to imply is stupid.
Stop giving gun license to everyone. Ban buying of weapons. Thank god it is not allowed in India. Otherwise there would be more shootings in Indian than USA.
lol yet marrying off little girls, forced marriages and sexual assault of women all the time is? Get a clue.
Nothing. Weapons manufacturing and trading is all capitalistic and political.
If assault rifles are outlawed, and that law is enforced, it will make it more difficult for someone to get one and kill multiples of people.
I would put retired military guards in all the s hools and also put a escape door in ever room, need these for fire escape anyway. Children should never only have one way in or out of a room.
Start listening to kids, before it's too late!! 💯😢💔
Make schools illegal. We can't have school shootings if there are no schools
I think a lot of this is connected is with mental health, and the consistent reporting by the media.
I mean obviously, you gotta be pretty insane to go and kill random people. Or little kids for that matter.
have only one main point of entry and have students turn in their cell phones prior to 1st period to avoid any distractions during class
I would say very strict gun laws or ban guns, this helps a lot. (Uk Dunblane massacre, Australia Port Arthur massacre)
Men should stop selling drug and women should stop sex work which is impossible in the us. Unfortunately shooting will continue
Crack down on mental health in America
less democrat governors elected
We have to allow teachers to arm themselves.
gun control!!!
Gun control
Don’t sell guns simple

We should ban schools
