How hard would it be to make schools safe from would-be shooters?

Question

1. Only ONE door should be able to be opened from the outside. (This was the policy in Uvalde, but it was ignored, and children died)

2. The one door that students can enter, should have a metal detector, at least one armed guard, and random pat searches. It should also be equipped with facial recognition capability. (Every time a school shooting happens, it turns out the shooter has a rap-sheet a mile long)

But the Democrats don't want to protect the innocent children, they just want the corrupt government to take your guns. Moronic presidents like Biden tell you that you don't need an AR-15 to hunt deer. No shit, Sherlock, the second amendment isn't about hunting deer. It's about countering a corrupt government that wants to be a dictator, like Kamala.

So why won't liberals secure the schools? Do the communists want school shootings? Would the shootings be a stepping-stone to total control?

I have a gun, and I HATE the fact that I need it.

If you have a school that you have one way in and one way out and you have a metal detector you have a security guard right there. I mean just like a courthouse that would add to the safety of every kid in there at least 50% and then if you had signs or warning signs or I mean nothing is foolproof but there has to be a way to do it.

It's sad but I think it's all about the money. But I think it's very important that we figure something out because nobody wants to say I love you have a good day today to their child as they're going to school.

And the next thing you know you're getting a phone call saying that your child is dead from a random shooting at school it just makes no sense..

And the other thing is I don't know about any other parent but I knew if my kids were having a problem if they were upset about anything I mean I knew at the moment it was happening if you're in your child's life you know that something is bothering them... And the odds are it's probably the parent the kids probably being bullied being abused in one way or the other and there are parents and should just be held responsible I don't care how many hours a day you work you need to be in your kid's life at all times

Because I would have to bet every kid that has been a shooter at school their parents had to have known something before it even happened I mean months before it even happened

It would be impossible to make schools 100% safe. Hell shootings happen even in courthouses. I would NOT recommend a one entrance/exit policy only because that would only help the shooter.

Here are the measures I would recommend as someone who is both ex military and ex law enforcement:

1. Allow teachers WITH A CARRY PERMIT the option of whether or not to keep a weapon on themselves. Teachers undergo a massive background check, almost to the same level a police officer has to endure. A teacher can DEFINITELY pass the required background checks to be armed.

2. Make fire extinguishers MANDATORY in all classrooms, not just certain points in the hallway. Fire extinguishers can make very effective defensive weapons AND the teachers could put out fires in their class. The spray can blind a shooter and, if it gets in the weapon, can cause a delay in being able to shoot or throw the shot off a bit. The extinguisher is heavy enough to bash in the face of the shooter. The spray can make the floor around the shooter slick. Not the best defensive effort, but if you are going to die anyways at least a fire extinguisher has a few handy ways to help you increase your odds a bit. At least it can buy time for your kids to escape.

2. In most schools the principal's office, most of administration and the school secretary have offices at the main entrance. Have an AR-15 or similar weapon in that area, somewhere the kids cannot go but the staff can access. Have at least 3 people in that office trained on the use of that weapon. Obviously, don't let these people be the hero who tries to hunt down a maniac going through the school, but have this measure in place in the off chance they need to defend themselves and/or if the opportunity arises to end the threat then and there. If not a firearm, then some other type of weapon.

3. Have 2-3 armed guards/law enforcement in the building instead of just one officer. There are many ex-military who would jump at the chance to protect kids. Most of them would be awesome at the job. Again background check would come into play.

4. Metal detectors at ALL entrances.

5. Design a building where there are no classes on the first floor but anyone entering and exiting the school has to do so through that floor. That way, if a shooter does get in, there are no students on that floor to pick off. The time it takes them to get to another floor could be precious time to escape. Also, have stairs at multiple points in the hallway, not just the ends of the hall.

1. Fine. Reasonable, though as someone from here mentioned earlier, schools might overlook the policy either way.

2. Turning every school into mini-airport security? Really? The schools already have a godawful budget to the point where they laid off people recently, but of course, let's just add some more extremely expensive gear and staff in order to make it skyrocket! If you're willing to add more money into the schooling system, sure, but just be aware of that.

These are all stopgap measures. The real answer here is obvious - eliminate the crazy person who would use the gun in this manner in the first place. Tighter background checks (with which most people agree by the way), proper psychological treatment (yes, you should see you psychiatrist, but that requires affordable medical care), and proper parenting (shitty parents who mistreat their kids are often the reason kids turn out crazy) are the real solutions here that actually resolve the problem. A crazy person, with or without a gun, will find a way to hurt people either way.

There is no need to to anything other than to stop sensationalizing it.

A big problem is that the world population keeps getting bigger and bigger, and we are flooded more and more with news. It gives very distorted and misleading views of the world. When you take all the worst things that happen in a population of hundreds of millions, or billions of people, and present it to the people on a regular basis, those people begin to think those things are normal.

In reality, schools are one of the safest places for kids. Schools are safer than playing outside. They are safer than a kid's own home. They are a heck of a lot safer than riding in a car.

We often hear reference to the odds of being struck by lightning. We use that phrase to mean something is so unlikely to happen, that it's damn near zero and not worth thinking about.

Well, the odds of a kid getting killed in a school shooting are less than the odds of getting struck by lightning. But the media and politicians would have you think it's normal to get hit by lightning.

I would contend that scaring kids with all the boogeyman stories is doing more harm than good.

It's simple. The places with the strictest gun laws are the places with the most gun violence and highest murder rates. Just look at the statistics. The places that keep you from owning a gun are the most violent places in the country. Gun laws don't work for obvious reasons. Criminals don't care about the law. One of the main reasons for such sad events is being bullied to much. Thus I suggest to track and act very harshly against known bullies in every possible legal way. Education sure would help, for instance by pointing to the silly weak and catastrophic side of the winner - looser logic in general.

Keep in mind that victims of constant bullying will develope a non expressed accumulated hatred that one day may need to be vented, and considering how easy it is to get weapons in the US, no need to rub it in more.

There shouldn’t be talk on how to stay alive a little bit longer. We must emphasize the prevention to these even happening. They’re horrible and there’s lots of directions to point at. However that would completely avoid resolving anything.

So, why does it happen to begin with?
Adverse effects of pharmaceuticals that Doctors are pushing on anyone and everyone at any age?
Is it their upbringing and they’ve finally retaliated?

I’m in true believe there’s a reason behind it and that’s what needs to be emphasized and looked at and work together to resolve this.

Fencing around the grounds. Cameras. One door for visitors that allows access from school grounds to off campus. Door is locked from inside and can only be opened by administrator or security.

But the issue goes deeper: What if the person waits in the parking lot until after school? What if he shoots through a fence or window? Why does the US have so many school shootings compared to the rest of the advanced world? Where are these shooters getting their weapons?

these days there are parents who don't do crap about their kids owning weapons or getting to a dangerous weapons. People see this stuff all over social media before the incident occurs, and do absolutely nothing. There are a good percentage who do say something. the school officials seem to somehow wait until after the incident occur to act concerned. The school officials should make it mandatory that they leave their backpacks, purses, or whatever it may be at the house. Start searching their lockers and also providing mandatory counseling for all students. Students cannot attend school if they don't wanna do counseling. lockers need to be searched every day. have metal detectors at the door, in cafeterias, in classrooms, or whatever areas. Start watching their social medias and this should be mandatory.

Facial recognition by a government school violates the 4th and 14th Amendments, looking for criminals without probably cause or even reasonable suspicion. An interest in protecting children doesn't override the need for a warrant, ever, unless there are exigent circumstances at that moment.

You shouldn't hate needing a gun, people have needed guns since they were first created, and they needed them before that but couldn't get them. Then it was knives, all the way back to caveman clubs. Human nature has never changed.

Also isn't an AR-15 just a 9mm handgun made up to look like a rifle? It doesn't have any more functionality than that? They talk about them like they're machine guns.

In theory not very hard, but the reality is, most schools don't have the funds to make their schools safe from shooters. But if the did have the funds, there are several things that can be done. Fist, only have one entry point that's guarded with an armed guard, camera and metal detectors. Second, replace all doors with bullet resistant doors. Third, equip and train teachers to use taser guns. Besides making schools safer there can be other things that can be done, to where there is no shooter at all. First, media outlets and other entities stop glorifying school shootings. Second, eliminate zero tolerance policies, which has a negative impact on kids who get bullied. Third, focus on mental health, and potential triggers of mental health such as certain medications. 4th, make it easier for parents to discipline their kids without fear of them being taken by CPS.

My nephews middle school has a ring doorbell that you ring to get buzzed in. Also the doors are locked and in the hall way there's a TV monitor patrolling the front with cameras. I also remember a police officer at the school walking around the campus.

To start off with, how about actually addressing the victim blaming schools do to bullied students, punishing the victims when they stand up for themselves, and doing nothing when the bullying is happening.
Actually taking care of those issues would stop most, if not all of the shootings from happening.
Also, putting cameras in classrooms to hold kids and teachers accountable, stop blaming with no evidence, and show evidence when teachers abuse students.
