Perhaps one of the places in a society where we all place our children, our schools, is the LEAST defended against from an emergency situation such as the emergence of an active shooter.
I graduated from Stoneman Douglas high school in 2014, where four years later would be the site of one of the most horrific pr tragic school shootings in US history.
I remember the doors to many of my classrooms NOT being locked.
Also, the main gate or entrance not being locked, as well as there not being a significant perimeter around the school.
Anyone and their grandmother can literally waltz on through to the school, choose any of the numerous classrooms to go into and have a very high likelihood of getting into these classrooms to do whatever they wish to the students or teachers.

•Why isn’t there an actual perimeter around the school to prevent unauthorized entry? There’s already a gate, why not lock it and why not enclose the rest of the school? Makes no sense.

I went to school in the Los Angeles area... look at how old I am and consider what I'm about to describe to you. We went through a bag check, walk through a metal detector, and a pat down. That was back in what? the 90's still. Kids got shot every other month and it never, NEVER, made the news. They'd get out of school and get murdered like some prison scene.
The left controls the media man... and that's why you only see the gun stuff and not the pencil stabbings. Also why you'll only see the particular types of shooters (race based). Fuck politics. It's always been band man, it's just getting bad all over the place as the population grows. Schools that never felt it will feel it.
I say send your kid to a Jewish school or a Catholic school... or how I got lucky, I went to Burbank Options For Youth Charter School... Normal high school diploma, 2 hours a week, none of that social drama/prison setting stuff, and my grades bounced from stright F's to graduating with a 3.8 GPA on time even though I had failed every year for the first 3 years of High School. Imagine that... take a kid out of a prison where he has to worry about getting shanked and he can finish 4 years of High School in just 1 year with good grades... normal high school diploma and not that High School equivalent bullshit.
The problem is my kid isn't old enough for Highschool yet, and yeah the issues are there just like when I was a kid. It tears me apart because I know damn well they just sit around doing nothing like I did... probably still watching Disney movies, reading rainbow, and willie wonka more than real school work like I went through where all the work gets sent home with you after a 8 hour day and it's called homework. Not only that my kid knows more about pronouns than math and English skills. Fuck your gender sex stuff nugga, that won't help you do your damn taxes! Wanna do sex stuff, well how about teaching them that making babies with the wrong person too early will leave you broke!
I'm ranting... this clown world just pisses me off. They want to 're-imagine' every god damn thing including the stuff that worked just fine. Thank god I don't have a daughter because I'd have to worry about her sharing a bathroom with basically anybody while the boys still just piss all over the walls and not just the toilet seats and on the toilet paper.

Before I was born they started making elementary schools safer, at the time the logic was cause in the 80's and that, kids were being kidnapped from schools by non-custodial parents or people pretending to be parents, or perhaps a family friend who wasn't authorized to pick them up.
They remodeled them over time, over the next two decades to have a single entrance and exit... that they had to pass by the secretaries.
By the time I was in elementary we all had to go in that one way and out and there is barriers there. The classrooms do have their own doors to exit in case of a emergency. This school was built like a square for the classrooms, with the library in the middle... classrooms all around the edge but the outside doors were always locked and alarmed, if anyone pushed them open the alarm would go off... but it was that way for fire emergencies, or whatever... not for active shooter.
My home state allows any employees and visitors with conceal carrier permits to carry on the property and has for the last 15 years. Guess what, no mass shootings have happened by legal gun owners at a single school.
There is even a state law that prevents the district/principals from asking which employees are carrying concealed. Considered a invasion of privacy, and parents that want to know, to try and put their kid in a different class are out of luck.
No one knows how many conceal carry but they are all told if anyone see's a gun they will be considered a shooter until proven otherwise, so better not let it show. Even one female teacher accidently let hers show and the school resource officer tackled her.
Honestly though most police cars don't even have bullet proof glass in them, so funding is the main issue. Schools don't have funding for security, the state or the feds should do that to help out.
The high school wasn't that way when I went but has recently been rebuilt from the ground up as it is a super old building that would fall down in a earth quake and was cheaper to build a new one, and the new one has a single main entrance and exit. There are other doors with alarms that kids often use and set off the alarms thinking it is funny.
So how do you stop kids from leaving the building through a exit that is a emergency exit rather than the main entrance?
Many suspect the reason there has been no shootings at any schools here is because no one has a clue how many teachers, janitors or even secretaries or other staff is armed. They do train them to hunker and wait for law enforcement, rather than try to actively hunt down the shooter too.
1. Teach your kids to respect others and to not make fun of others when they are down. it's okay to poke fun at/with your friends but don't intentionally be a thorn in someone's side.
2. Teach your kids to speak up. If one their classmates seems troubled and their talking about possibly coming to school with a weapon, then it needs to be reported immediately. Don't dismiss it or shrug it off, be brave and tell the teachers/schools fasts as well as parents. Even warn other students about what was said so people will take it more seriously.
3. Obviously there needs to be more security, more police, and more cameras being watched 24/7 during school hours. At this point they need to start investing into getting metal detectors at the doors of every school. We have them in the airports, it's gotten to a critical mass where we unfortunately now need them in schools/colleges.
4. Kids need to learn what to do in case of emergency. They need to know where to go and where to hide. They also need to learn to stay calm no matter how scared they are and learn to flee when they see an oppertunity of safety.
I agree with a lot of your points accept giving teachers training on firearms and carrying. A lot of people aren't keen on that idea and the reason for that being is we already have a problem with guns being brought into the schools buy students and strangers. People worry about the kids possible finding it/knowing where it's hid so they can use it for themselves. There are also a lot of teachers in the schools who are a little off and not super fond of some of their students, this too can lead to a shooting incident where a unhinged teachers snaps on their students. Also teachers in general have enough responsiblity on their plate, they have teach, get assigments ready, grade papers, put up with students that give them a hard time etc. and now have to train to become an on guard duty while still not being paid enough? It's too much. Yes teachers should have some training in safety measures but now their being asked to go beyond their career field. This is why a lot of teachers are currently leaving the profession. Teaching has become a very stressful, dangerous, unsupported job that many are just not will to put up with anymore.

Well Uvalde Texas (Robb Elementary) was not only the police department's fault but whomever designed the school. The locks on the doors were placed outside of each and every door, so the teachers could only lock it from the outside, and not from inside the rooms. In the case of Robb, it was a fatal flaw. The police's response time was terrible, as well as having incapable officers responding, which also was a fatal mistake with columbine in Littleton, Colorado and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
You have to not only think about better locks, doors, response time and specialized in-depth training for law enforcement and teachers that can be helpful in the most stressful of times. I think having teachers be trained should be mandatory.
People that say banning guns is the option are highly uneducated on the matter... There are hundreds of millions of legal and illegal firearms in America. There is a school that is going to be armed with AR15s in safes for officers to have a quicker response, as well as many schools arming teachers they have the ability to carry a firearm with strict training, and many have been armed for years with no issue.

I really don’t know the answer. It’s certainly fair to say we’ve had guns longer than we’ve had these frequent school shootings. And you could’ve freely walked in and out of any school I ever went to. Something is changing in people, like in their mentalities. We had a guy at my high school, wore a trench coat, super smart but super weird, used to tell us he aspired to blow the head off of The Lincoln Memorial…weird shit. Like he’s the guy I would’ve expected to shoot up the school if something like that happened. People would sort of clown on him, but not too hard. I don’t now if that’s exacerbated these days by social media or what. But the bottom line is this shit didn’t happen, then one day, it finally did, and then after that, it’d happen every now and again, and the frequency has definitely increased in the last decade. We used to be mean as fuck back in the day, lmao, I don’t think the bullying is any worse. Shit, some of our teachers would just be like “so punch them, I bet they won’t harass you again” to people if they complained. It was much more left up to us. ”Fight at the flagpole after school, or don’t, but the bullies will bully you until you show them you won’t stand for it”, that was kind of the mood. Not sure how many kids got the shit kicked out of them trying to back bullies off of them, but I guess that’s just how life works.
I think my answer for everything these days is just that there needs to be more kindness in the world. It feels like a non-answer since you can’t regulate it, but I really just think the world’s problems are largely just kindness issues.
It has to do with how gun ownership is managed, the reasons for gun ownership in the first place, and the mental issues faced by school shooters. (I live in Singapore, where gun ownership is completely illegal) Here are my two cents as a former army conscript who has handled and fired guns before.
1. Why are gun laws so relaxed in the U. S? Guns are a very dangerous weapon. The fact that anyone can walk into a gun shop and walk out with a gun without much hassle is a cause for concern. Gun control has to be much stricter than it currently is. Or even better, prospective gun owners should undergo mental evaluation before being allowed to purchase a firearm. Or even better, just ban firearm ownership.
Now before you come at my throat claiming concealed carry is essential for self defense, the whole reason people even need a concealed carry is because the U. S. never really had measures to reduce crime rate relative to other first-world countries. You can't go out freely at night without fear of getting assaulted. This is not the case where I am from. Even young ladies and children are safe walking around at 2a. m.
2. Some Americans argue that "gun control is restriction of freedom of choice". I'm just going to put it out there: limiting freedom over firearms ownership will without a doubt save many lives by preventing such school shootings. A healthy amount of restriction is always good. It prevents the extremists of the population from doing stupid things.
3. Everyone is always talking about school shootings and its victims, but it's time to realise the cause may be the shooter's mental health. This points to a huge flaw in the U. S. education system: there seems to me ZERO teaching about managing stress, handling emotions or knowing how and where to get help, meaning that people (including school shooters) do not learn how to manage mental health properly. Here in Singapore, thrre is an increasing emphasis on actively teaching students how to manage their mental health, and providing adequate support channels that are readily accessible to anyone. So why is there little or no emphasis on mental health in schools? Mental health is never a sudden thing; it is usually caused by an accumulation of traumatic events/situations.
The only realistic solution is to restrict access to guns. Everything else is just an idea to make public schools as shitty of an experience as possible so republicans can justify handing it all over to private profit, as they have been doing to public institutions for the last four decades. Thats all they do - get elected, make everything they touch trash, use the fact that it is trash as the reason we should want responsible private businessmen to run it, and then handout our tax money to those private businessman on a daily basis to prop up their shitty business model. They have done this for railroads, health care, prisons.. many things and education, social security, and the USPS are the last remaining holdouts for republicans to hand out to their rich friends. Then we will have no say in how any of these things operate because they will all be ran privately. This is why it's so hard to find a Republican that's not a piece of shit - Republican politicians operate on turning everything they touch into shit and have managed to do so even with their voters.
Change society for example. Has no one realised that most of the shooters are young men without a purpose? The problem is the West is currently creating a generation of youngs guy that don´t have social contacts, that can´t articulate their feelings and learn to handle their emotions through video games and most importantly that are emotionally cold.
The problem is that those guys will always be there and sure you can public school into high military head quarters but that won´t solve your problem because the only thing such creates is fear and hate. There´s no love in prison scenario where all your steps are supervised especially for guys. Chances are that it creates even more mental health problems and it could get kids intimated by the security officers.
Your goal would be absolute control and therefore there´s no freedom. The problem is that in a culture that where everything is subject it´s hard especially for guys to find a purpose. I think that´s the crucial point because what is life to person that feels constantly reminded as inedaquate, worthless or dumb?
I don´t know about other people´s school experience but I needed one question in all school subjects answered to motivate me to learn something: WHY shall I learn this? As far as I can see is what´s needed a system that gives guys a purpose some don´t have at the moment. They don´t see the recognition but instead feel like they have to do something more than to be seen.
Maybe it needs more social circles that actually care for another and a society that helps boys to figure out manhood. You don´t need money for that by the way you need interest. It needs groups, places or friends a guy can turn to if he feels life sucks.
Edit: Sure you can and maybe should invest in certain school protection like bullet proof doors and windows. But that can easily overdone and weapons alone won't solve the problem hence shooters can equip themselves also. Weapons alone only increase the violence.

There is nothing to be done, because those in charge of the schools - from the Teachers Union down to the individual school's administration and teachers, have no interest in doing anything to solve the problem. For most, it's far more important to maintain it as a political issue than to improve anything.
When you are faced with a difficult and complicated problem, the solution is never going to be simple, and you have to be open to out-of-the-box ideas and letting the data dictate your decisions - which means being able to admit when your policies have failed.
Schools today are largely lawless places where the "inmates are in charge of the asylum." Bullying is rampant and almost always goes unpunished, and even violent assaults on students or faculty won't get a student expelled. In California and other states, schools have a "no expulsion" policy because they don't want to lose their funding.
Given this environment, does it sound like the schools have any motivation or competence at taking on these complex problems?
I have been a Patrol Officer for over 20yrs and here the things that needs to be done. 1. We need more Armed Security Officers (Former or Active Military, Police, or Strong Security officers) that are well trained in combat in schools that are on the same page working with Police Officers. 2. There needs to be a Safety net (like a built-in back door or tunnel) for kids to get out in every classroom, Hallways or Safety room that is bullet and Bomb proof. 3. We need better policies, not Principal, Dean's, or School Board policies that doesn't work. We need policies from Professionals like FBI, Special Forces, and Safety Security for protection on how to prevent the horrific things from happening and catching suspects. 4. Advanced Security Systems and Cameras that are monitored by the Police to alert at any moment. 5. Security Check on all students and Faculty & staff before entering the property. 5. We need to work close with the parents, kids, faculty, and staff to see if there are any suspicions or Mental help, we can direct them to a counseling, attorney's, and Law enforcement. 6. Practicing drills of Safety with kids. 7. Police Officers needs to start sending decoys to go undercover all year long to get insights to prevent bad things from happening.
I think this stuff should be tried out in private schools first. Public schools aren't in the business's of doing what's best for kids. What they do is get more fat retirement packages for teachers and get more government funding for just existing. They'd fail in a competitive market.
I say it should be tried on private schools, because they can brand themselves as a "shooter-proof school." If that helps get more students and money, let the changes continue. Maybe the government would pay attention after that succeeds
As far as good measures: impact resistant windows is good. Since graphene can be mass produced now, it's very affordable for a school to get more than it needs. I have no idea how much it costs to install though.
I think it would be good to include few entries and many exits (only able to be opened from the inside) in the building.
Teachers should also be encouraged to conceal carry. This policy should be hidden from students.
Hopefully we'll reach a point where school shooters are nobodys. That will discourage shootings in the first place.

In the UK we learned that hard way that schools need to be 'Hardened' against opportunistic madmen/women who would seek to injure our school children & staff.
The Dunblane massacre took place at Dunblane Primary School near Stirling, Scotland, United Kingdom, on 13 March 1996, when Thomas Hamilton shot dead 16 pupils and one teacher, and injured 15 others, before killing himself. It remains the deadliest mass shooting in British history.
It only took that one incident to change the way access into schools was allowed, etc. Unfortunately it also took a lot of firearms out of the public's hands.
While living/working in America I was shocked at how soft American schools were as targets. As long as I live in the US I had a CCW and carried everyday even while doing substitute teaching, the school board & students never knew I carried.
One of the first things that US schools should do is take down the 'This is a gun free zone' signs, if the teachers & others staff do not like it they should be asked to move on to another job, because those signs say 'We are a soft target, come and attack us.', and any teachers that remain should be encouraged to take firearms training courses and carry a firearm daily if they are comfortable doing so, they might never need them, but just in case.
Our school was surrounded by armed security guards at all entrances and exits. No one can get in or out without them checking your bags. Any threats made online or anything out of the ordinary and presents a threat to the public, should be reported by those who seen it on social media instead of keeping it quiet. Parents should monitor their kids’ activities and purchases online. And anyone who’s being bullied should be given help and the bullies should be given punishment. Little things get big and deadly if and when nobody cares!!!

you need to pass a series' of tests in order to get a license to operate a vehicle. Different vehicles require different licenses. A person's vaccination status is a different topic, same goes for voting. Pretty sure you need information more important to vote than your student ID. What are you looking to talk about?

Their parents or someone they know will probably have a gun, not necessarily to take it to school. Many American people freak out about having armed and trained teachers, let alone armed guards / campus security officers. Israel and Russia do it, given terrorism they have faced. But never mind foreign nations, just think about it:
--I went to the bank today, and even at my local branch, I came across an armed guard person.
--I had to file some legal documents first at the County courthouse and then at the Federal Building in my city area - where armed security people were present.
--I took my lady to an art exhibit the other weekend at the museum - which was guarded by armed personnel.
--After the art museum, we went to the food court at the local mall and shopped a bit - which also had armed personnel.
--To say nothing of passing local police or Highway Patrol cars, which contained armed people.
It we can protect our artworks, our boutique mall stores, our lawyers/judges, and our money with armed personnel, why not our schoolchildren?
I remember when I was 19, and I wanted to skip a couple days of high school and visit my old middle school to see my old art teacher. Not even first going to the main office to ask permission.
I just walked over during school hours, doors were open, no security that I can recall, and I walked into the class room and just hung out for a while. My art teacher and I were close, so she didn't complain. I was able to do this twice!
I supposed someone watched the security footage of me one night, because the third time I did this, a police officer stopped me immediately, told it to me straight, and sent me on my way with a warning. I don't remember if he was the only one on duty, but he certainly was vigilant.
I didn't think of it much at the time, but in hindsight... A shooter could have had the same access I had. And often I like to think of myself as having saved everyone's lives there due my own ignorance.
They are fine the way they are now. Any more would probably be a bad thing for students in a sense of their freedom, any less would be awful in terms of health. But also I am talking from a place that literally has never had a school shooting that's also even with a gun shop right near one so, just England been England as in terms of not needing to worry about that. But even then I would not advocate for dumb ideas like locking all doors students need to be able to leave the school obviously it's not a prison you can lock them in.
Not much. It takes at least two guards per entrance to stop ONE surprise attacker who is armed with automatic or semi-automatic weapons. The first armed guard will be shot dead and you need to pray the second armed guard lives long enough to draw his weapon and return fire.
We need a full ban of all automatic and semi-automatic weapons except for police and military purposes, and if we need to search everyone's houses, automobiles, and tool sheds to accomplish that, then that's what we need to do. We need more armed police officers on school campuses, Florida is working with the idea of utilizing retired police officers! As well as requiring all active duty police officers do their standard daily paperwork only on a school campus!
