Poland and Hungary ban Ukraine grain imports to protect local farmers?

Shouldn't countries be allowed to protect their farmers?

To answer this response I would say that because they are in a war Ukraine is desperate and will sell their domestic produce for as high or as low as the can get, much like Russia will with its oil/gas.

I doubt it's to protect farmers, farmers tend to be low down on politicians priority lists they'd happily let other countries import cheaper products. There's always a deeper political motive behind these things.
