It used to be that politicians would accept the will of the people and allow most legislation to go through on a majority basis. Then the filibuster, which used to involve someone actually standing up and talking, was used to protect minority positions, which was, to an extent, OK. Then there was cloture, which allowed 67% (later 60%) of the Senate to override an individual Senator's filibuster, and that was a reasonable democratic compromise between one Senator being able to hold up the whole country's government and unreasonable tyranny of the majority.

The real problems came when they made it a formality to invoke a filibuster; one senator just had to say they intended to filibuster and there had to be a cloture vote requiring 60 senators to agree.

Make the *******s stand up and talk about why they're there. Make it have to be relevant, even if they have to repeat the same dozen words over and over. Make it be work, not just raising a middle finger.

I hope so, but I fear the extremists are controlling the dialog. Mainstream democrats and republicans are not all that far apart on most issues - but most of them don't talk to each other and don't realize it.

I wish the two sides could come together and interact civilly, but neither side is willing to make the effort, and both sides would need to.

Honestly no not in my lifetime. In all my 39 years they haven't gotten along.

In order for them to get along there's certain things that need to happen.

1. Taking money out of politics. Absolutely no campaign contributions from private donors or corporations. Elections should be tax payer funded. Each candidate will only get an x amount of money say like 250000 and no more. It would drastically change how they campaign. No more tv ads. No more radio ads. Print ads and in person campaigning.

2. Get lobbyists out of politics. There should be no lobbying for corporations what so ever. If this doesn't pass all politicians should have to wear nascar style jackets with all the corporations they are in bed with.

3. Term limits on the senate and Congress. The president gets 2 terms. So should Congress and Senate. That would get new fresh blood in.

4. All new Bill's should be limited to 10 to 15 pages. Be written in plain terms. Plus the Bill's have to actually pertain to what the bill is for. No adding stuff that doesn't pertain to the actual bill. Clean water act must go for cleaning up water. Not to give money to some performing arts center or some museum.

If COVID didn't do it, nothing can. I mean it was a virus - the enemy of all prokaryote life, and still they couldn't work together. If aliens invaded they would either blame each other, or deny the aliens existed.
