My guess is that they are Americans who believe the world revolves around America so if they believe that something terribly happens to "Gods special place on earth" their knee jerk reaction is to assume that this would go against Gods plan and that he would naturally retaliate. Basically, because their fee fees got hurt they expect the heavens to literally punish the ones responsible.
