While I doubt the media would make as big of a fuzz there is actually a chance there would be as big of a response. Mainly that when it comes to sea rescue everyone in the business is highly motivated to jump in and that is doubly true for submarines. If there is a submarine in trouble anywhere then even the mortal enemies of that submarine crew would jump in to try save them if they were also crews of submarines. Its like an unspoken rule.

Yes look at all the other huge rescue attempts of trapped miners, people who fell into wells, capsized boats, people lost in the mountains, none of these were super wealthy, some were extremely poor.

The interest was because it was unusual and interesting - and most important a problem that technology might be able to fix.

The big problems like the migrant boat that capsized around the same time are different - there is no obvious way to fix them.

I think so. But if 5 guys built a deep sea sub out of 44 gallon drums in a backyard we probably would say they were intent on committing suicide and they won.

If those 5 guys won tickets to go on a factory made deep sea submarine then the same effort would have been made.

There is an element of culpability in the first case that is lacking in the second.
