For example, hearing aids are not anywhere near fully covered because they're "elective"... so whether you can HEAR is elective, but whether you can mutilate your genitals to "change your sex" is necessary? wtf.

This is the true problem of the USA health insurance system. And never mind the gender mutilation madness - the citizenry have to learn the difference between essential serious shit hitting the fan insurance coverage, as opposed to just getting insurance subsidized minor goodies.
I remember the bint Sandra Fluke insisting her birth control be health sinurance subsidized. And no, her sex life is not the issue, but the reality is that insurance is for *major financial catastrophes*. People paying a bit at a time over the years into insurance savings and investment funds so that a major calamity is covered when it strikes. Getting routine birth control - less than a monthly cell phone bill out of pocket - for free - is not affordable insurance coverage. Such moves will bankrupt the insurance policies, be they government OR private.
The more and more minor and routine items we demand health insurance cover, the higher and higher the premiums will have to go. And the minor treatment costs soar too, since people stop shopping around for the best deal. What would your car's oil changes cost if ca insurance had to cover them? A lot more, since no more competitive price shopping. And the Car Insurance in such a world, which is expensive enough already, would be astronomical.
I don’t know but it seems very unfair particularly with hearing aids. Some people can’t work or even communicate without them, it seems there should be coverage for them.
