I was following life streams up to that point (4 am to me) and I think everybody was in disbelief with that announcement when he was just 200km from Moscow after about 8 hours on the march and shooting down helicopters. WTF?
Prigozhin hasn't exactly been pulling punches for some time calling Putin gran pa though Shoigu has been the main target. Can Progozhin think he isn't going to get some polonium supplements in his tea?
The thing I find hard to understand is he has separated from his Wagner forces. All protection gone, his entire negotiating position forfeited. It is as old as empires to liberate an Emperor or King from bad advisors and Prigozhin could potentially have done that with Putin and demanded a Cabinet reshuffle. Three Cheers and everything has been saved.
Putin did flee and I imagine Shoigu. The internet was shut down so Prigozhin could not put his message out. Probably Prigozhin didn't get the support he thought he might but having the most forces and ammo in the right place at the right time counts. In Moscow there just appeared to be police forces.
Even though Putin fled, Prigozhin taking the Kremlin would surely have put him in a powerful position to negotiate.
So like you I am quite flabbergasted.
There are some theories that are emerging though they are not very convincing.
The Telegraph is reporting that Prigozhin's family (wife, 2 daughters) were under threat from FSB. That would seem poor coup planning unless wife and daughters couldn't leave Moscow and it is an tradition of empires to hold family as hostages. That always was part of the function of a Court.
There was certainly an effort by Shoigu to take over Wagner troops and the rebellion might have been motivated by Prigozhin's desire to keep his African mercenary business going rather than regime change. Regardless I think we can see Prigozhin as opposed to Shoigu and Gerasimov. Possibly opposed to Putin only to the degree that he is endangering Wagner's business model.
Shoigu had seemed to be replaced by Gerasimov for a moment but yesterday video of Shoigu inspecting troops was released - though could be old footage. There was news that charges against Prigozhin were still in place and his whereabouts were unknown.
The one thing we do know is Prigozhin was sufficiently motivated to take troops to Moscow. The reasons he has given is quite possibly what he thought will play well rather than what is important to him. He doesn't seem to have gone straight to Belarus - it would seem a death warrant if he forfeited his power base and it would seem to be damaging to African business if he lets the Russian Ministry of Defense take over his troops.
So I'm inclined to think the incredibly impossible and incomprehensible hasn't played fully out yet.
I can't validate this but I have read that Russian MOD troops are arresting Wagner troops in Syria. Several African countries might need to find other mercenaries to replace Wagner troops.
Sergey Surovikin seems to have been arrested. General Armageddon was intended to save Russia's invasion. It will be interesting as to what purging does happen.
I don't have any inside information but I guarantee there is a lot more to this story than any media source I've seen has revealed, and I think that's more because of panicked ignorance or projection of bias than anything else.
There is no way this guy would believe he is going to be allowed to retire (to a Russian vassal state) after allegedly staging a mutiny against Russian generals. Either this entire story was heavily faked for ulterior motives, or his own men (or infiltrators) turned on him and forced him into a deal. Russia is a country that assassinates people even accused of betrayal, so unless they fear him becoming a martyr, his days are numbered, deal or not if that's really what happened. The alternative story however, makes Putin look weak which would be a pretty uncharacteristic gamble on his part.
Let me point something else out too: the amount of ground this guy's troops covered in the span of a day would be just about impossible to do without direct help and being unopposed. That is not a troop movement you can just pull on a whim that doesn't get noticed even in just the prep phase.
This was staged from beginning to make all involved in coup soldiers responsible of treason and then pardoning them under the obligation they sign a new contract with Russian Army for less money of course. Poggy betrayed his own mercenaries and soldiers who survived the meat grinder in Bakhmut. What a great patriot for oligarchy. lol

It's a bit of a loyalty love triangle. First we got putin dictatorship his word is law. Second we have russian ministry of defense (or mit) a many headed oligarchs that plan military day to day. prigojine is the leadership of the Russian veteran military outside of Russia most prominent in Africa as missionary soldiers. For the last year in force in the Ukraine invasion.
It all began a few weeks ago MIT wanted to shorten prigojine leash as official Russian military. That didn't fly with prigojine. So prigojine turn on mainly the MIT tanks aimed at their building. This gave putin an ultimatum MIT or prigojine. Putin chose MIT and prigojine fucked off.
If putin picked prigojine and scapegoated the mit, that would have probably ended the Ukrainian war with no fault claim peace offer. With it now putin siding mit and losing veteran military and every military base outside of Asia/Europe. That's a big kick in the dick on a marathon race you are already losing.
The strongest man in Russia got cuckold and begged to stop and ask them to leave. That's where we are at now.
It's called a movie... You're watching it... What have you never seen a movie before? You know for entertainment... You realize they aren't real right? You ever watched Wag the Dog? Maybe you should... Then you might understand how Hollywood and the rest of the media are tied together with government and the intelligence agencies to pull the wool over your eyes.
There is no forgiveness or forgetting an insult like that. He will pay for his insolence when Putin is in a better position to collect. Him, his entire family and any close associates.
Prigo knew Putain was after him, he showed him how easily he could take power in Russia if he wanted to, Putin got scared and sent his Belarusian paw Lukashenko to bargain, and gave everything Prigo wanted. The latter then left and that's it's.
@spartan55 Him? Nothing, he's just a pawn, a middleman so Putin don't have to meet Prigojine directly. Putin just used him to give some shit to Prigojine.
Basically, Prigojine was certain Putin would kill him, and he just put some pressure on Putin to make sure it wouldn't happen. At the moment he got what he wanted, he left and abandoned his men and anyone supporting him.
There's a saying in German that translates to:
''Rabble fights; rabble makes peace''
I mean. Looks like you have a handle on what happened.
Sounds to me like there's more to the story than what the media is saying
It was all a ruse to motivate the Russian army, but I bet Putin has him poisoned anyway.
Explain to me what a prigojine is.
