Why you so excited about Juneteenth?
its not when slavery ended in all of theses united States , that would be 5 months in December 18th 1865 when the 13th amendment was ratified ending slavery in Kentucky and Delaware.
Indeed Juneteeth didn't even end Slavery in the State of Texas, the state being soo huge most all of the state would not know of the order for days.
An order that was itself arguably very illegal being Texas was no longer combating and the slaves thereof not being used in the war, their stealing by congress was a violation of the 5th amendment.
So what exactly are you celebrating on Juneteeth outside of Galveston Texas?
Opinion Owner+1 y@monorprise cause it is our black holiday! We got it they submitted and let us have our own day selected!
They bow to our power and even have it on TV for kids! Brain washing Thier own brats into some amazing culture!- +1 y

This
"So what exactly are you celebrating on Juneteeth outside of Galveston Texas?"
os ridiculous. That's like asling why we should be celebrating the 4th of July anywhere outside the states that were the original 13 colonies... or why we should be celebrating Christmas outside of Bethlehem.
Now I've come to realize that either you are profoundly stupid, profoundly immature, or profound asshole. I'll give you a chance to reply before I block you after midnight Universal Time on Thursday. Meanwhile, I am muting this question. - +1 y
Fuck off!! Juneteenth is literally only about freedom in Texas so at most that should be a Texas holiday. If you are talking about BLM that pisses me off cause y'all fought for the dumbest crap ever. Why, what happened on Juneteenth that is even remotely comparable to July 4th 1776?
As far as I can tell a Union general arrived in Galveston, Texas after the State had made peace, and violated the 5th amendment with a proclamation freeing the slaves in only the city.
Slavery would not end in the rest of the USA for anther 5 months December 18th with the 13th amendment ramification.
So beyond historical ignorance what does Juneteenth accelerate? - +1 y
@monorprise on that date, were Black people free? Didn’t only Whites get their independence? Weren’t many colonists still loyal to George III, who promised to free the slaves?
- +1 y
FYI they were freed in TEXAS not the United States

@HippieVeganJewslim The Declaration of independence, was the point where the continental congress has declared for all the State's dependence, many if not most states had already separately declared independence on different dates.
So its the equivalent of the 13th amendment being ratified in December 18 1865. As for the last slave being free that still hasn't happened. It just became officially illegal in every state.
Regardless of the questionable legality of the Union general on Juneteenth in Galveston, Texas, that was not when or where said policy had been declared as that would be January 1, 1863, nor was it the last place it would be exercised.
So being neither the start, or end of anything, there was nothing at all special about Juneteenth

Exactly right I agree it drives me crazy
And I think for most part they learn it growing up from either their family or friends which means they're followers instead of thinking about common sense and being a leader about it
When our loving God said that he made us all equal created us all equal that's exactly what he meant just because he does not state that he does not know where we're going to live on this planet so he made our bodies capable of adapting to any extreme harsh conditions this Earth has to offer and that's all this happened our ancestors lived different parts of this world and to protect us our bodies were able to adapt it's common sense - +1 y
He even puts it right out in front of us each and every day it's summer time right now I'm out side every single day sweating in the hot sun I get a tan of a lifetime every single summer just think if I lived in an extreme heat every single day in times my body would adapt to protect my skin to protect me and that's what happened to our ancestors it's right in front of us every day and people still have to be ignorant for whatever reasons they hate themselves I guess I don't know I'm just fed up with it all there's no reason for it

Well I really hope that they don't remove this question everything happens for a reason in this world and sometimes we all have to remind ourselves of a lot of different things.
This is his right and his choice to ask this question
And I look at it like this is here and now you were born here you were raised here why do you ask a question like this to hold yourself back in every aspect of life
I personally have been through a lot of hell a lot of crap in life
Me on my time on this planet but no matter what it is I'm not going to be ignorant about it I'm going to accept it and I'm going to grow with it I'm going to still become the best that I possibly can I'm not going to follow anybody I'm going to lead myself to a better place
All that question tells me is that the guy does not believe in himself he's a follower he's a s*** starter and he doesn't like himself
None of us live through that even himself. He can reflect back on anything that he wants he can do anything that he wants to he can ask this question if he cannot accept that he has rights just like every single one of us that's his choice this is his choice to ask this question it's his choice to keep holding himself back every time that he becomes more and more ignorant if he wants to live in that life or in that world more power to him but I always look to go forward I always see something brighter positive and I don't give a f*** I'm going to fight to get there I'm not going to live in the past that I had no part of I'm living from this moment on by the way happy Fourth of July Independence Day today we should all become independent and then we should all join together because we're all going to need each other very soon look at the bigger pictures - +1 y

+1 yAmericans celebrate the 4th of July... Independence Day. Last I looked, an African American is an American.
Juneteenth is a bogus holiday. It celebrates the anniversary of slaves being freed in Texas, not the entire country. So, does that mean that only African Americans from Texas should celebrate Juneteenth?
The Emancipation Proclamation, that essentially freed all slaves, was announced on September 22, 1862, by President Lincoln. So, September 22 is the date that should be the federal holiday, but it's too close to the Labor Day and Columbus Day holidays, so they went with a day in June instead.
16 Reply- +1 y
The Emancipation Proclamation did no such thing- it was a publicity stunt, and nothing more. Read the text: it freed all the slaves IN THE CONFEDERACY, over which Lincoln had no authority. It was the equivalent of Biden, outraged by deaths from gun violence, banning private firearm ownership in Canada.
- +1 y
Also, it was January 1st, 1863.
- +1 y
@NamerOfStars It WAS signed on Jan 1, 1863, after being formally announced the previous September, and that is the date most historians treat as more important.. You are partly correct. It did only legally free slaves in those states that had rebelled. But slavery in the states that stayed in the Union was already illegal by each state's law, so the Emancipation did, in fact, cause slaves in the entire country to be free.
- +1 y
Independence Day is in 1776 not 1862 remember? That's why they celebrate Juneteenth which they should celebrate because a lot of imbeciles didn't see them as human for over. 100 years after our country was formed.
Also they celebrate Juneteenth because that's the day the news they were freed made it's way to Texas. Remember there wasn't the internet or a news station announcing it immediately to everyone.
Here's the thing... why do you even care if people celebrate the day they actually found out they were freed? Wouldn't you be absolutely amazed and celebratory yourself if you were a slave? I'd never forget the day I was told if I was a slave.
You're all to butt hurt over stuff that doesn't impact you.
I say if you're a African American they can celebrate if they want or don't have to celebrate July 4th 1776. Why? Because they can. I'm white and am just sitting home this fourth. I don't feel like going out for no particular reason and will be alone all day by my choosing. Is that ok with you? - +1 y
The actual end of slavery in all the States was December 18, 1865 where it ended legally with the 13th amendment's ratification freeing the last slaves in Kentucky and Delaware.
June 17th, 1865 as you noted only really effected the city, and the proclamation violated the 5th amendment as not only were the slaves in question NOT military assets being used against the union but owned by individuals in a state had had already surrendered.

+1 yThis seems to assume that all Americans of African descent are descended from former slaves from the United States. This is clearly untrue. Simple example: my friend Tone's family is from Trinidad and Tobago and did not move to the USA until the 1980's.
Some people who are not descended from slaves, including those whose ancestors were abolitionists, might also want to celebrate General Granger's proclamation.
And, frankly, this idea plays into the "us vs. them" mentality that is causing so many of the problems the nation experiences.02 Reply- +1 y
I love this insight. Not everyone here (black or white) has a correlation to slavery just because others of their race did.
I can trace my family’s ancestry to Northern States who fought against the Confederacy and several died - yet we get lumped in with the enemies we defeated. Kinda sucks. - +1 y
@Flatmanlewis Exactly.
5.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Juneteenth is NOT a holiday for Blacks "for themselves".
It is a holiday for ALL of us to celebrate the end of (embarrassing for Whites) period of slavery. It is an American holiday, not a Black holiday.
If you don't understand that, then you need a major attitude adjustment.
And, yes, they should celebrate Independence Day. Why wouldn't they? Why would you ask such a question?

@monorprise
The origins of Juneteenth date back to June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, a U. S. Army officer and Union General during the Civil War, issued an order in Galveston, Texas, announcing that all slaves were free under the Emancipation Proclamation. About 250,000 Black people enslaved in Texas were the last in the country to receive notice of the proclamation, which President Abraham Lincoln had issued more than two years prior granting freedom to all enslaved people in Confederate states.
Juneteenth was subsequently a day of celebration first in Galveston but then it spread being recognized as a holiday in other states too. It is sort of reminiscent of how Memorial Day got started. - +1 y
@abc3643
As I indicated I am aware of the story given and the significant of that date to Galveston Texas, but NOT the rest of Texas least of all the rest of these united States.
As indicated slavery would not end in the north practically for anther 5 months. It would not even end practically in teas on that day, only the immediate areas under General Granger's control.
I don't see any real significance to this date outside of Galveston. The real date is December 19th 1865 half a year later when slavery ended everywhere in the USA. This date is of very minor significance in the grand scheme of things. It was not the first, most numerous, most wide spread, nor the last place.

But since most care more about race baiting and celebrating a false holiday commemorating an event that didn’t even happen (the Emancipation Proclamation did not “free the slaves”. It didn’t even apply across the entire Union. It took the 13th amendment to free slaves. Celebrate that!
Oh that’s right. Blacks have to invent their own history.

What a nonsensical question to ask. Juneteenth was just considered a national holiday a few years ago, yet certain races of people don't like that we get it. But if your job gives you the day off, I BET you still take it off, don't you?

I always find it silly when people bash America for having slavery when pretty much every other country on earth did and the only thing unusual about America and the west in general is that we actually ended the practice. But go ahead beat up our history and culture we all know it has nothing to do with Slavery, or history and really its just marxism.
010 Reply- +1 y
How is it just Marxism? Talking about how people don't have to celebrate a day that didn't include them has nothing to do with Marxism lol.
Opinion Owner+1 y@Friendlybro79 July 4th 1776 does include every single American.
As for how it relates to Marxism many American hating Marxist, particularly during the cold war where this anti-American push begin in support of our communist enemies long hoped with the disillusionment of individualism and freedom for which American independence was founded that they might have better grounds to push forward their own revolution.- +1 y
Slaves were not considered American in 1776. They were chattel. It said all men are created equal but they weren't considered men. They were slaves for over 100 years. You're rewriting history.
Again what does Marxism have to do about some African Americans not wanting to celebrate one day because during the independence of America his or her ancestors were still enslaved. They were not free. They were not independent on July 4th 1776.
Opinion Owner+1 y@Friendlybro79 Not every African was a slave in 1776, nor were they nessarly not Americans, that depends upon a very much debated point of view. Hence the 3/5th compromise.
- +1 y
Dude you're brainwashed lol. It's only debatable when talking to racists. Seriously the 3/5 compromise is not helping your standpoint. African Americans were not able to move about or live like white people for even far after 1865. The civil rights movement didn't happen for a reason. It's not like slaves were free and automatically accepted in society and given fair opportunity. Listen we can be proud that America is evolving and as long as we continue to help see through what we say exists in the constitution for everyone then I'm all for it. But I'd you're African American, I totally get why you're not celebrating today. I wouldn't either and it's totally ok and understandable. We weren't close to perfect then and we aren't now. Are we better now yes. Progress still needs to be had because we can always be better to all.
Opinion Owner+1 y@Friendlybro79 No history being my hobby, I just know a lot more of it than it seem you.
You seem to be brainwashed with broad generalizations and prototypes that completely ignore details of history.
Just because slavery was legal in some places does not mean it was legal in every place. Just because some people are racist in some circumstances does not mean everyone was racist in every circumstance.
As for the "Civil rights" act there are many who would point out with sound reasoning we would have been far better off without that blunt and irresponsible use of goverment force.
Certant African Americas would be far better off.
Their circumstances were significantly improving until that act and its associate movement brought a stop and even reversed it.
Like it or not the more you do for people the less they do for themselfs. If someone believes others will do the hard work for them then they won't focus on their own choices and do the hard work to improve their own condition. Indeed they will get worse as they use that excuse to avoid more and more work.
It may shock you but there is little worse than you can do to a person than to tell them they can't or don't need to help themselfs.
This is why the "Civil Rights" act actually ended up making things much worse for the African American community.
African Americans more than most Americans would have been better off if they were left to continue to pull themselfs up by their own bootstraps as every other group had done.
No expectation of help, and no excuses.
- +1 y
Their circumstances were significantly improving is like a person on life support is now barely breathing on their own and you're like fucking wake up and get a job pal haha. Almost a 100 years later the civil rights movement is them pulling themselves up by the bootstraps and saying they're not taking it anymore. You're a clown. It was so good in the 1960s that schools were still segregated in many states. F off already. And pull themselves by the boot straps is ridiculous. How about I put shackles on you and your ancestors for a hundred years and have half the population never look at you as an equal and then tell your kids to stop complaining.. Pulling yourself up when the stack isn't rigged against you is one thing. Trying to pretend that slavery ended and it was just super attainable is just a sign of ignorance. You're a big man my friend.
Back on topic of the fourth of July and celebrating or not and Juneteenth. How about you argue with a room full of African Americans about how you feel like they're wrong and tell them your history. No one has to celebrate anything they don't want to. Are you suggesting they should be forced to somehow and seriously why do you care?
Opinion Owner+1 y@Friendlybro79 The black community in the 1950's witness nearly a century of continued economic and social progress which basically stopped after the Civil rights act. Yes that progress for many of them was inspire of cultural and legal obstacles which only made it more admirable.
As i just said the trouble with the civil rights act was it appeared to erect far more formidable obstacles that basically just stopped their century of progress.
Frequently in complex living systems it is better to just let them recover on their own.- +1 y
I don't agree with anything you're saying and you haven't really proven your point rather just said things as fact without much to back it up. Of course some people will say it wasn't successful or didn't work and that's because there's still progress that needs to happen.
It's just how ending slavery didn't change their world immediately. They weren't the next day homeowners working great jobs or successful business owners. They did pull themselves up my their boot straps but here's a fact from a Gallup survey that shows things in the 1960s for what they really were. 78% of white people admitting they'd move away from their neighborhoods of too many black people moved in.
I wonder how many of those people cared about black people's freedom and equality when there is a good chance those are the same bosses that wouldn't hire a black person just because they're black.
I think we are at the point where you I can safely say you can reply if you want but I will not any longer. Feel free to get the last word on if you're the type that needs to do so.
You've changed the subject again and I tried to get it back to the original question of should they celebrate July 4th. I don't think anyone should do anything they don't want to because there's no law saying you have to celebrate a holiday. If you think everyone should that's great. The fact is not everyone does and they have a reason which you don't have to like. It's nothing you're gonna do about it except what you're doing now. Im not sure if you're white but if you are have a conversation with black friends and civilly discuss this with them. In my circle of friends that don't celebrate the fourth, I've heard them and I'm with them.
Have a good day my man. Unfortunately you're not convincing me of anything that you're saying.
Opinion Owner+1 y@Friendlybro79
There were less harmful ways to fix theses problems than passing a federal law which promised to solve their problems for them and essencly told blacks they couldn't overcome these problems with hard work and dedication.
The century of ever greater progress up until the 1960''s is proof that the black community was not only overcoming theses issues but earning respect. The fact that Washington was even able to politically pass such an act, proved they were in fact making great progress there too.
But the act itself did more harm to them than good.
Like it or not goverment least of all the Federal goverment can't force anyone to think anything, the federal goverment is hard pressed to force anyone to DO anything.
If an employer didn't want to hire you for any reason they could make up anyone of a million reasons not to.
