Yes, that's the second time in American history that it happened, the previous one was 1876. Hardly "common practice... done frequently".

In 1960, one state, Hawaii, hadn't finished a recount when electors were supposed to meet in DC in December. The margin was about 140 votes in the original count. That state wouldn't have made a difference to the final outcome, and the recount flipped the result to the alternate electors.

In 2020, there was a coordinated effort to have seven states produce similar documents, although the (Republican) states' authorities all unambiguously found the result was that Biden won (by thousands or tens of thousands of votes) in their states.

Its not a crime to present an alternate ballot of electors. This has been done countless times in disputed elections.

@goaded We really have no idea who won, so Trump's claim to have won is possible. He certantly won among the votes that we know were actually cast by voters. We can't know from whom or where soo many of the extra votes that were allegedly casts for Joe Biden came from.

Many of them by the laws of the States in which they were casts such as In Pennsylvania should have been thrown out for this reason.

AIUI, they forged an official federal election document to claim that Trump was the winner in their state and they were the true electors from the state. The idea was that Pence would use it, and others like it (sounds like a conspiracy to me) to claim the election results in multiple states were "disputed" and throw out the results.

That would throw the presidential vote to the House on a vote-per-state basis, and Republicans held more states than Democrats so they could have installed Trump as president, as long as they were oath breaking traitors to the constitution.

Pence refused, so plan B, the attack on the Capitol, went ahead to stop Pence performing his duty, with the same endgame.
