I really didn’t expect it to be as deep and reflective as it was.

I won't see it. Personally I made my mind up about Barbie a long time ago. And I still hate how they screwed over Bratz they killed it with a half assed lawsuit because it in fact was been more successful than them. And this because Bratz was just better.
Barbie dolls have also been linked to promoting anoxia and even had a dumbass thing in the past that gave a pro-tip to been skinny was not to eat. It was obviously a joke but giving this to a young girl it's understandable they got impressions from it that were negative.
I think Barbie really is just something that's run by greedy corporation that was built to sell rather than think first then only after criticisms they decided to think.
But even still it's just money and not worrying about bad side effects, did they worry about using all that pink paint? Nah. Did they worry about ruining an IP that people liked? Nah. Did they worry about her motto to not getting fat and her having such a skinny frame? Nah.
Did they attack Aqua for making clearly a Parody song that should fall under fair use? Of course! Which is even more dumb because this song undoubtedly gave them free publicity not that they needed it.
As you can see, I can go on forever about everything wrong with Barbie. And just Mattel it's self been a overly bad company. Which is sucks really because I do like Monster High still has the small frame issue tho but can't say it ever had a slogan saying Don't eat.
I got gifted the tickets and went to see it two nights ago, and honestly I didn't expect it to be such a good movie, especially because it's not my genre.
I didn't find it as this "extreme feminist wish fulfillment fantasy" that some people made it to be, rather it's a very balanced story with a solid message about what society conditions us to be, vs what we actually want to be.
The ending was a bit underwhelming and in my opinion a bit discounted, but overall the movie is solid.
I agree. I hate to see that some regard it as feminist propaganda, like really? That’s all you got from this? I saw it as a showcase of how the idea of the Barbie doll has changed over time to reflect and represent womanhood in reality, and how both Barbieland and reality are imperfect and flawed in regards to the power dynamics between men and women.
Exactly.
I've also really liked the character of Ken - not exactly about how the turns to what seem to be MRAs, but because his hang ups are somewhat understandable to me - not the whole matriarchy vs patriarchy thing; but the fact that historically he had begun as Barbie's counterpart and boyfriend and then became a side character with no life of his own without Barbie.
Hence why he tries what he tries to do in the movie - he goes from the extreme of having no life outside Barbie to trying to control her to feel better about himself.
The sensation of feeling that you are relegated to be the sidekick of someone else is one that I understand and have felt in the past.
So I really liked how in the end when they make up Barbie encourages him to be his own person like she is.
Plus again with people accusing the movie of feminist fantasy, like you said I think they miss the fact that Barbieland being dominated by the Barbies over the Kens is not portrayed as an utopia, but as a deep imbalance of power between the two groups, just like the gender dynamics in our world.
Just saw it. A bit chaotic with too many messages (felt like multiple movies wrapped into one) but it definitely had some funny moments. Slightly underwhelmed, but not upset.
Amazing movie so suggest you go see it.
Only then can you rant about it! Other wise you can't have an opinion on how bad it might be!

Couldn’t be less interested in a Barbie movie…. but then I saw Ted Cruz was big mad about it, so it might actually be awesome, lmfao
So you commented something that means nothing on a question!
You earned your dude badge today congrats on being useless
@RoseySarah Sick🤙
UPDATE: took my lady to see it (big deal there too, she’s been down bad with a central nervous system illness and has been more or less homebound the last…. I’ve lost track of the years now…so it was awesome just to get out with her).
So…. I actually thought it was pretty solid, I enjoyed it more than I’d have expected. My gal was outright emotional for some of it, haha, but I’m glad it was impactful for her. I think I was more just laughing at how ridiculous all the Kens were, especially Gosling-Ken.
The outrage over the movie is laughable, and I can’t imagine any person to be taken seriously would be. Even if you have more progressive objections to Barbie, body standards, etc, that’s all addressed, too.
Final points:
1) I am in love with who I guess would be called Writer Barbie…holy SMOKES😍😍😍
and 2) ATROCIOUS that they didn’t bring back Aqua for this. I know they remixed it with more current artists, but the youth need to know how awesome/terrible “Barbie Girl” was. Aqua are Amer— er… some-kind-of-Scandinavian icons who deserve more respect. Dude shaved his head except for the two racing stripes on the side! Who you know’ll do some shit like that?

Not marketted toward me, So i dont really care for it. Im on the complete opposite of the demographic they are marketting toward and would very much like a deep psycological horror movie or somethin
I haven't seen it. Is ken a Alpha male in this or is he just a low IQ beta male who constantly makes a fool of himself, relies on strong female leadership and needs Barbie to protect him in fist fights.
I drove her car at the Premiere.
haven't seen it but i want to. i used to have barbies growing up and sylvanian family.
Sounds like fun, but I'll wait for it to come on TV.
It's like that movie with actress Alice Silverstone.
