Economically speaking both the Ukraine and Russia are not first world countries.

Both have corrupt economies and corrupt governments and are comparably poor. That Russia is 3-4 times the size of the Ukraine gives it an insurmountable advantage.
One that would have enabled them to win the war quickly were it not for decades of their own corruption and problem.

The same corruption and poverty that makes Russia such a non-threat to NATO.

The real problem here is what happens when a large nuclear state like Russia becomes economically troubled and desperate.

That big red button reserved for when you have no other choice becomes more and more like the only good option.

Short of that all the financial and security resources being spent fighting that diffiuclt war is not being spent securing your own military nuclear and chemical stockpile. Which also starts too look like an ever more attractive source of much needed revenue.

Meanwhile your bio-weapon stockpile starts to look like a nice way to start evening the odds and get revenge against the people bankrolling your enemy without them knowing for sure you did it and retailing as COVID-19 proved quite easy.
