I think people come off as phony because they have anxiety.

Everyone at some point in their life feels anxiety, whether it's before a first date, a job interview, or a test. Anxiety becomes clinically diagnosable when people start being unable to act normally (having difficult conversations, saying no/properly declining plans, leaving their house, keeping their word etc).

That said, even if your friend has anxiety, you don't have to be friends with them if you don't like how they're treating you. Someone's best may not be good enough and that's okay.
