Worth is not determined by the possessions you own, but by the person you are.
I am. Born and raised. 🇺🇸
But, I would consider myself more of a philosophical type that likes to look deep within — to not cave into the pressures of society but instead blaze my own path.
Materialism and capitalism is rampant in the United States.
But as Tyler Durden from Fight Club says, “You’re not your f*cking khakis.”
I have more respect for a poor man with good character than a rich man with poor character.
I also respect the grind as well.
A man with drive and ambition who wants to move from rags to riches, if that fire within him is real, I respect that.
A man who is a trust-fund baby who never worked a day in his life obnoxiously flaunting his cash, I don’t have respect for.
I don’t hate the rich either. I myself am pursuing my own riches. But I also understand that although money is important, there are more important things in life, and nobody should lose their soul over it.
A man is more than his possessions.
Perhaps. I am a minimalist though. I can fit all my possessions in a carry-on luggage and a backpack. I do not own a car. I work from my laptop and travel the world. Most of my money is spent on travel and accommodations. I invest in experiences more than I do possessions. I’m typing this out from Southeast Asia. 🙂
Yeah, experiences are what we remember on your deathbeds anyway. When someone is dying and thinking about the life they lived, they’ll be trying to recall all their memories, rather than counting all their stuff. I believe having that perspective is important as we go through life.
And about materialism making the world go round. Even if money is what sustains society and existence, I believe it’s still important to never forget the deeper things below the surface. Such as the relationships you form, the memories you create, and the person you’re becoming. Poverty can’t take that from you. Those are yours to keep and cherish.
It would mean you would be unwise but not worth any less.
