Should Jared Murray have gotten sent to prison or was a mental institution appropriate?

Jared was put in a mental institution for murdering a man without any conclusive reason. Although it’s debatable if putting him in a mental institution was appropriate.

You have to watch the whole video, but this case is truly one where I can see the insanity plea being legit. The guy was monotonous and even in post interviews or press trying to talk to him it was consisten. No remorse, no hesitation to confess what he did, even saying that death was understandable as a punishment should he be tried.

His affect is fairly flat, which might be symptomatic of schizophrenia, and testimony from his friends indicated that he suffered from mild delusions. The apparently motiveless crime seems to point to some mental defect but his cognitive state at the interview seems entirely normal. That's all I can tell you, I'm not qualified to give a diagnosis.

unless a real psychiatrist identify a real emotional problem, prison. not "temporary insanity" that we need observation for one month.
