NATO countries in Europe had a binding agreement to pay a percentage of their GDP to pay for their defense. They violated the agreement and were not paying it forcing Americans to have to pay more. President Trump was the first president to stand up to them and make them pay the share they agreed to pay (which by the way is a lot less than America pays). @exitseven Gifts and bribes are literally the same thing. That is why there are rules for what gifts a president can accept, why he needs to disclose it and a bunch of other stuff to make sure that they can't be bought.

Also, regarding the rooms. Trump himself increased the rates on the rooms beforehand because he knew countries would book them and also because when he for example went to his own resorts he would make sure the secret service booked the overpriced rooms using taxpayer money. Those rooms were a central part of one of his method to extract wealth into his own pockets which is why they were such an easy way for other countries to bribe him.

Also it does not matter if they were "at the going rate". It is still handing Trump money directly. If you think the rooms are too cheap or whatever you just book more of them for longer. You can hand over any amount of money you want this way.

Its also worth pointing out that Trump did not disclose any of these gifts and also took a bunch of stuff that he was not allowed to. This was clearly done with malicious intent.

Lastly, bribery does not have to be illegal. Especially in USA you idiots legalized it previously and opened a bunch of loopholes such as the citizen united case allowing corporations and groups to spend unlimited money on supporting politicians campaigns.
