Are you going to observe Veteran's Day?

I will be thinking of my WW2 vet father and all the other guys in the neighborhood where I grew up that served in the military to make the world safe for democracy.

I will also be thinking about how disgusted they all would be to see what our government has become.

I will be doing the same thing I have done every year since I was 24 (I was unaware my age would be displayed so my age is listed incorrectly. I am 39) which is getting a group of homeless vets and bringing them out to a restaurant and getting everyone lunch. I do this with a group of homeless vets already but on veteran's day I get a larger group. my standard group is 20 or so. it has been my way of helping them since our government has failed them in every aspect. I do it multiple times a week and as a result I sometimes see a couple fall away from the group and I do not see them for a few weeks to a month or 2 and then they find me during one of the lunches and tell me they have gotten a job, a place to live and are getting things together and that is thanks to me.

I always take time out to teach the basic meaning of Veteran's Day to my students every year. I actually have 3 students who raised their hands that their father is a vet. or are in service.

My hubby's belated father was in the Air Force.

Sometimes, we just go to random cemeteries to pay respect to others. Some have fought in different wars. We like to read a little about them and just enjoy the day being out in the cemetery.

I don't like wars.

The good thing about my school is, my old principal still wanted kids to use paper and pencils. Still want kids to hold a book in their hands dispit the push for all digital.
We also recite the pledge of allegiance every morning at 8:30, facing the US flag with our right hand to our left chest. I am glad I am still able to instill some value/traditions to our young students with my classroom door closed.
All our grade team members have similar value/backgrounds /so we work well together.

I have many ancestors who fought, and some who died, in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, Civil War, WW I and WW II. Veterans' Day is a day to reemember ALL veterans, not just those who died in the line of duty.

I am retired military. I have relatives who were wounded and some who were killed in war. They come from different political beliefs. But most were fine with the different political beliefs they held, until Trump arrived and dragged down our government. If the GOP had continued as before, even those who disagreed with it respected it. But now, his criminal behavior and those who cover for him and follow him have caused that respected to sour. If the GOP wants to regain respect they have a lot of weeding to do in the far right garden.

I am noting people saying they are in the military so they are veterans. They certainly are military members, but a Veteran is defined as a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. A Veteran is someone who has been discharged from their servic.
