How much do you enjoy discussing politics with others?

Love it! Love to debate. Don't care what your views are, or if they don't get what I'm saying, love to talk politics.

I like politics. I'll talk about it some to those who seem "at least" willing to listen to different POVs.

I talk politics only with people mostly with similar views to mine. I can't be bothered with the others.

I specifically really only like talking politics with people who really don't agree with me at all.

I REFUSE to talk politics with anyone. Just ends with arguments, hurt feelings, cancelling people. No thanks.

Most people are so uninformed that it's pointless to ever talk about politics with anyone.

And honestly it's not their fault. To be truly informed requires a lot of studying.

People mostly just listen to what others think and adopt their ideas or perspectives.

I like to take on all perspectives and understand them clearly for what they really believe rather than straw man arguments.

I feel very alone because there aren't many people capable of entertaining multiple perspectives like that.

In my experience the people who most WANT to discuss politics aren't terribly thoughtful or intellectually open or honest, so it's not very enlightening or useful to discuss anything with them. Generally I find the most interesting political discussions are with people who are genuinely curious and not wedded to any particular policy stance on a given issue. But those people tend to be less focused on discussing politics as they're generally focused on other things.

Yes. Because people who strictly adhere to a particular ideology are closed minded. And closed minded people are very hard to maintain meaningful discussions with. And, as you point out, and I can corroborate from my own experience, open minded people are less interested in politics because they have other more filling activities to fill their interest

@mobiusforniner Exactly. So I try to focus on politics as little as humanly possible. I find that if someone mentions some "burning political issue" to me that I've never heard of before, that's a sign that I'm on the right path.

This. I got invited to a party once with the upper echelon of society. I was NOT prepared in the slightest. People with 3 degrees, doctors, lawyers, politicos, heads of corporations, you name it. I thought I knew some things about some things, but 20 minutes in, I was drowning and was forced to be silent and just head nod a lot because I could not keep up and didn't want to seem like an idiot.

I’ve been in this position too! It can be uncomfortable. I’ve also found, however, some very highly educated people have nothing but academic experience. This is a very different experience than having ‘been there’ & ‘done that’. I appreciate the worth & value of education - but even then it has limitations. An easy example, as my trauma doctor friend has said: “I may be doctor but believe me, you get shot on a street somewhere you are far better off of the first person there is a trained 20yr old combat medic than five doctors. We work in hospitals. They work in the real world.”

Yes, it's really uncomfortable, and I was sort of ambushed which made it even worse, but yes, there are some really smart people who are really dumb in the ways of the world or who cannot tolerate those without a degree by their name having an opinion or they feel the cushion of money will always put value to their opinions in life. In saying that though, there are things we can learn from just about everyone if we open our ears and listen. Even if someone is wrong, knowing how another thinks and works can fund an entire debate. P.S. I know quite a few medics, and your friend is right!

Sociocultural topics interest me, especially the abortion and vaccination debates. Not because I find a sick joy in telling off people who disagree with me, but I enjoy hearing all different sides of a debate.

Basically I'm a mild centralist. I really don't get how anyone can be 100% left or right wing without recognising the glaring flaws in both parties lmao.

Could not agree more. When I start in on my views, I'm like, but this is just too far for even me to have to agree with and I certainly don't agree with the entirety of my party in everything we do. I don't believe in any person like that in general, because there are glaring flaws in literally everything that can't just be swept aside just to make a point or to claim victory with impunity.

There are very few times in politics were I've thought, 'yep. That person made the best decision for everyone'. Almost everything the people in power do can be seen as awful from another lense.
Everyone where I live loved the state premier, Mark McGowan, because he managed covid 19 brilliantly and saved thousands of lives in the process. I'd pay money to bring him to parliament 🥲

i usually keep my mouth shut because people love thinking they're right. we're both not right or wrong. but they sure like to think they are and i just don't want that drama or conflict in my life. it's not constructive. so my views have always been completely private.

Love it. Though, in fairness, I work in politics so it is sort of part of the job, as it were.

Also, I must admit, I enjoy debating those who work in politics. They tend to be better educated about the subject and are less emotional. As soon as a political discussion degenerates into name calling and shouting, then I tend to lose interest.

Politics is a fascinating and far more complicated subject then people tend to understand. See also Aristotle, Plato, Burke, Rousseau and the other great political thinkers who would, I am sure, were they to see or hear the debates in American - and indeed global - media today would roll their eyes.

only the "five on fox" does it right. in real life cancel culture ruined conversation. and calling stuff offensive to hide opinions.

imagine a world where both major political party said the other side is offensive so censored "nonsense" and "offensive." we need to protection opinions and learn from fox five as above.

i remind you to think which side talks about issues, for example trump reminds people "fetus can feel pain" and which side calls names "you racist or phobic or mysogenist" to discredit opponent. all those names on one side.

I don’t enjoy talking about politics because Both sides are corrupt and the media that breaks the news writes the narrative to control our opinion. For both parties. It’s intended to divide us. Love the one and hate the other because vanguard and black rock own the news and lobby the money to install the politicians. The people who they tell you to love and trust are the same people that investors are propping up to do their bidding. Not the peoples and since the masses join their tribe and watch the drama show of politics no real opinion is formed. It is just programmed into us. Get outside the system. Break free from the mind control. That’s what I like to talk about because We are far more powerful as a people then any one person could be and we give all that power to these corporations when we buy into this system.

Both politics and religion are topics which serve no other purpose but to divide people into discrete cliques. Especially in a professional environment, I refrain from any discussion on either subject. I also discourage my teams from discussing politics or religion too

I'm interested in politics and geo politics but I don't like to talk with others about politics. Most people are not competent enough or too biased for a discussion on certain level. I leave sometimes a sarcastic comment to cause cognitive dissonance and go away without any discussion, because it's with 90% of people pointless.

I don't talk about politics. Last election l, people were so hung up in their delusions that they wanted to force an opinion on me even when I was not eligible for voting.

Maybe in the past it was possible to have a civil discussion about politics. Although I am interested in the subject, I prefer just to read about not, not to talk.

Truth is, debates don't matter. It's highly unlikely anyone will change its views, in the end everyone will keep voting for the same person.

I never discus politics, as it can turn otherwise sane people into blithering idiots, especially in the USA, I spent 10 years there working, and politics there is so polarising it beggars belief, I learned pretty quickly to avoid the subject with my American co-workers, particularly around Election time.

"Discussing politics" to many people just means regurgitating what they saw on tiktok/reddit or heard on news (that by design is inflammatory.)

Generally, hard working blue collar people that are active in their local community have more realistic insight than activists and people who give themselves silly labels to feel more important.
