What do you think about Georgia getting a candidate status in EU?

It seems like the many Georgians have been wanting to join the EU for quite some time.


In the past, Russia has fought Georgia and won, not just during the 1921 Red Army Invasion of Georgia, but also the South Ossetian War (1991), the War In Abkhazia (1992), and the Russo-Georgian War (2008).



And now, Russia has their sights set on Georgia yet again, after the invasion of Ukraine.


Georgia deserves membership in the EU.


Not only do they have a history of fighting against Russia, but they also have fought alongside EU countries against groups like the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS.


They are a smaller country that has a history of being attacked by Russia.


The whole point of the EU is to band together so that smaller European countries can collectively have the protection and resources they need to defend themselves against world superpowers and larger countries.


To not accept Georgia into the EU would be leaving them to fend for themselves against Russia.


For any council members to vote against Georgia entering EU would be counter to the values and principles that the EU was founded on.

You make it sound as though they've been repeatedly invaded by Russia over the centuries, but they've only ever fought one single war against that country, and you think that this is a reason for them to be admitted to the EU. How bizarre.
Besides, most of the people who are actually already in the EU want to get out of it, but you make it sound like something desirable, a reward of some kind (for fighting against Russia, LOL).

It’s a response to Russia continually picking fights with Georgia — to put a end to it.

It’s harder for Russia (or any powerful country) to bully you if you have a lot of allies (e. g. being part of the EU.)

And yes, there have been multiple military conflicts between Russia and Georgia.

1. The Russo-Georgian War (2008): This was a fight between Russia and Georgia about two areas called South Ossetia and Abkhazia, where Russia sent its army into Georgia.

2. The War in Abkhazia (1992-1993): This war happened in a place called Abkhazia in Georgia, where the local government fought against groups who wanted to be separate, and Russia helped those separatists.

3. The South Ossetia War (1991-1992): In this war, Georgia's army and groups from South Ossetia who wanted to be independent fought against each other, and Russia was involved.

4. The Occupation by Bolshevik Russia (1921): This was when the Soviet Union, led by the Bolsheviks in Russia, took over Georgia and made it part of the Soviet Union.

5. The Georgian-Ossetian War (1918-1920): These were multiple fights in South Ossetia during the time Georgia was free from Russia right after the Russian Revolution.

6. The Annexation of Georgia by the Russian Empire (1801): Russia took over a part of Georgia called Kartli-Kakheti, which ended Georgia being its own country.

And to be clear, I’m not glamorizing or romanticizing the EU at all.

I’m sure there are a lot of downsides and restrictions that will come with joining the EU.

But, if the EU does it’s job of protecting countries who are part of the EU, then it’s a pick-your-poison situation.

Giving up some control so that Georgia will be protected by the combined force of many European allies during times of war.

Or, fighting Russia alone if Russia decides to take back Georgia (like they’ve decided to with Ukraine) since Georgia was formerly taken over in the past by the Soviet Union.

Georgians seem pretty excited. I don’t know much about Georgia’s history besides what you’ve shared and what little I’ve read. I’m going to watch 5 Days of War

My uncle visited one of the Eastern bloc countries with my aunt. They encountered a local farmer pulling a wagon. They tried to get a photograph with him, he ran off into the nearest woods when he saw the camera. He was terrified of being photographed while living in a country under Soviet control.

I think it’s a positive thing to reject communism and embrace mixed economies (Capitalism/Socialist programs) of the Western world like what the EU and US have. The US is a republic that has a liberal democracy.

I think Communism/Marxism are an example of good intentions paving the way to hell.

I think it’s a positive consequence of the changes Georgia has seen/made in the past couple decades.

@BoopBoopBeep There are only 50 u. s. States 5 inhabited territories. That said U. S. Georgia is more than twice as large in population and square miles as the Country of Georgia and about 10 times richer.

Not only would most of the population of U. S. Georgia find the EU stuckup and repressive in their attitudes towards guns and free speech but a threat to their money too.

Don't underplay the passion of a Southern man for Liberty and distrust of the goverment. @DryGermanGuy: Unsurprisingly, someone who is "so German" would use the same mix of bullying and gaslighting that his own country's bureaucrats use to pursue the interests of their powerful corporations.

There's nothing preventing the UK and France from negotiating common sea patrols (not that they were effective anyway), but the EU (read Germany) wants to punish those uppity UKers for actually respecting the general wishes of their electorate. And that's not the reason why illegal entry into the UK is so high. But let's not forget the German (Angela Merkel) role in spurring illegal entry by forcing its own open borders policies on the rest of the EU (hence the claim of labor shortages, which can always be fixed with higher pay and fewer regulations).

Being involved in treaties with the EU also means having EU (German) rules forced on you.

Mentioning trade treaties is a sure indication you're talking to a German. The UK's economy isn't almost half goods exports like Germany's to begin with, and it has different foreign trade priorities than Germany which certainly aren't addressed by German-dominated trade deals and a euro set up to serve Germany's export needs.

When I was ''younger'', the EU had been a lot smaller. I was a captive in that.
Your own region in those days was ''the enemy'' from the East :).
We all had been fooled in those days.
Anyhow - geographically, there may be a logic reason to count the East in. But how about the cultural or historical connection?
That's one reason why ''we'' still let Turkey hanging with their ''hopes''.

As meanwhile the world is saturated with economical greed, I will understand that specific regions try to have a share by joining this or that ''organization''. I cannot change this.
