In 11 years, 16 states will be mandating that all new cars sold must be fully electric. This will absolutely screw the poor and middle class. It will also screw the dealerships. I talked to a Chevy dealer on Monday. He said that if they go through with this craziness, the car manufacturers will no longer sell cars to dealers in blue states, so the dealers and their employees will all be out of a job.

So where does that leave you if you're in a blue state. I know, you can buy a used car!

I realize this truck is a bad example because it's a "classic", but if it's selling for $33,000 now, what will it sell for when it now becomes worth its weight in Gold.

I suggested to the Chevy dealer that people could just buy new gas cars out-of-state. He said that might be an option, but because of the high demand for new gas cars in red states, the prices could easily double or triple. And he also said he doesn't know what would happen if the blue people found out you cheated!!!

Well, Tesla has not updated its most popular car in 3 years. I think Elon Musk has seen that the electric car is a dry hole. Hopefully ath adults will be back in charge soon and all this nonsense will be reversed. I think people should have the right to buy one if they want but everyone should have a choice. And tax money should not be spent to build charging stations that will just be vandalized by a junkie looking to sell some copper to a scrap yard.

The question isn't "who"; that's obvious by looking at who passed the laws. The question is "why". Long term, consumption of oil at our current rate is unsustainable, and our society pretty much depends on widespread availability of cheap oil.

Electric vehicles are a logical next step, but there are some SERIOUS caveats: we need user-swappable power cells, lower fatality levels than Pintos, and models that cost less than an orchestral pedal harp. That last one will likely come with time- or it WOULD, if not for this idiocy. All it's going to do (aside from forcing people out of short-sighted states) is make people trust electric vehicles less than they currently do, and damage the long-term prospects of the technology. One bad element can destroy a new thing's reputation in the public eye- remember Olestra?- and these currently have several. The tech is NOT ready for prime time, at least not on the scale required.

I still have a few people back in Illinois who're on speaking terms with me, and I'm having them (in a low-level, informal way) keep track of Teslas without front license plates (which Illinois requires); it's a freaking epidemic. Of course, some of them are probably the same cars being reported multiple times (it's hard to know if it's the same one when, you know, IT LACKS A FRONT PLATE); that requirement is just ignored for that particular brand. I could see an exemption being given if that would damage the car, but the area behind where a front plate would go is just empty trunk space. There's literally no reason for it beyond "they're rich, so the laws don't apply to them".

I now own an EV. But wouldn’t if it was my only vehicle! It is nice for less than 150 mile trips 3 seasons out of the year!
I watched a show on Nikola Tesla. They said that his innovations is what help make EV’s possible. But they also said that until there is wireless charging technology embedded into the roadways. That will continuously provide power while driving. EV’s will not be practicable.

Batteires used to be an obstacle. Sodium being integrated is said to work around 0 farenheit well enough. Supposedly in 2023 they already were near the same energy density as li ion that's exhaustible and flammable.

As OP mentioned, the issue then not with the battery charging and discharging, is sitting in a car that's aimed to turn as close to 100% of it's energy as possible into torque, it'll mean driving in a cold car that doesn't heat up. When there's ice on the windshield you won't be able to melt it unless you sacrifice a good chunk of the charge, whereas gas cars utilize the energy leaks to heat without spending any additional fuel.

But fuck it, they're not 100% efficient in turning wheels, since heat is still made. Some horny engineering could recycle it to heat windows. And you just dress really fucking warm. It's doable... my concern with gas cars is inhaling toxins. Electric cars emit so much EMF it's far more unhealthy.

I can't believe how stupid it is to mandate electric cars in the name of carbon emission reduction when the electricity made to charge them isn't green either. Once they managed to generate 90% of electricity with hydro dams or some similar treehumping, then it'll make sense.

Most manufacturers already have EVs now. Chinese manufacturers in particular are doing them quite cheap compared to Tesla. Then there are other car makers like Volkswagen, BMW and KIA who also already have a few EV models. Mitsubishi and Subaru etc won’t be far behind. But the issue is the cost. Only the Chinese makes come close to being affordable. This should be alarming to the other manufacturers because if they can’t sell, they will have to lower the prices.

The main problem I see is in the second hand car market. If you can’t get a $2000 shit box when you need just any car right now, millions of people won’t be able to go to work. If people can’t get jobs because they can’t get their own transport then yes, even the greenies of California won’t vote for policies like that. It won’t matter to the ones who live in the cities who only rely on public transport anyway, but anyone living semi rural or just in the outskirts of LA won’t be happy.
