I'd have to say Woolworths. When I was a kid it was one of the hottest chain stores in the US. It was kind of a cross between the dollar stores and department stores that we have today. There was no such thing as a dollar store in those days (because about 10 cents bought what a dollar buys now!) The best part was when my mother took us to eat there at the food counter. They had really great food... milkshakes, burgers, sandwiches, desserts. It was just so comfy. No tables, just stools and you sit at the counter. And they had these great games. Like they had balloons at the counter and you would get a chance to pop one and maybe win a free banana split! There would be a little note inside if you won.
It was still in business for a long time in Canada after it was gone in the US. And to this day there is a company with stores in like Australia and New Zealand named Woolworth's... I think they are grocery stores. It got its name from the same person, I think he was an American businessman who started the original company... but I don't think the business there was related to the one in the United States.
Miss that place. There was something magical about it.
My kids and I used to spend hours at Toys R Us. Sometimes we'd end up buying something, sometimes we'd just look around.
Thanks for MHO

I used to go to Toys R Us a lot as a child and would even dream about being there lol. I remember towards the exit, there would be swing sets on display. I really liked looking at those, but my house at the time didn't have a big enough backyard for those and by the time they were really on sale, I was already too old at 12 lol.
The Incredible Universe was a HUGE superstore of electronics was founded in 1992. It had everything electronic! From electronic components to televisions and stereo systems, refrigerators and stoves, computer parts and whole computers, and even ham radios. A typical Incredible Universe was 185,000 square feet. It failed and was bought out replaced by Fry's Electronics which offered pretty much the same selection. Then in 2021 Fry's abruptly closed all of its stores.
Whatever you wanted from the electronics mentioned above to a huge selection of books on electronics and computer programming, they had it!
I miss Radioshack. It was so handy to stop in for batteries, the right plug or adapter, any kind of electronic thing I needed, even phones. I hate having to shop for things like that on-line, pay shipping, and have to wait. And if I wanted to return something, I could just go back to the store.
I used to love KB toys, Blockbuster and Toys R Us. I also miss Limited Too and Libby Lou
there was a local chain called Lechmere Sales. They sold home appliances, TVs, home electronics and later on they sold computers. They had an awesome stereo department and sold 35mm cameras. They had one of the best record departments as well. They over extended themselves and went out of business in the 1990s.
Computer City. You could walk around with the shopping cart and pick up all the components to assemble a PC, go home and put it together. I only went there once and then it was bought up by another company and shut down.
That would have to be F. W. Woolworth's! That was the one of the first stores they used down. They had everything in there that I liked.
In UK, I miss buying clothes at Debenhams. I miss buying some of my computer bits at Maplins. I miss our local M & S, although there is one in the local town. I miss Jessops for camera bits.
PC World before it became part of Currys. Another source of computer bits.
N & S Records, B & D Records, The Record Hut, Paul;'s CD's, The Purple Phrogg. Does The Platterpus still exist?
