The scruffy gold prospector decides to treat himself, and rides into town to get breakfast. None of the wait staff wants him in their section. It's awkward, so they decide the short straw has to do the deed.

So the losing waitress reluctantly waits on him and gives him the shitiest service ever.

And at the end of the meal he pays and leaves a $100 gold coin as a tip.

Next week he goes back to the same restaurant. Now the staff is fighting to see who gets to wait on him. They decide to all wait on him and treat him like a king. At he end of the meal he pays, and leaves a penny for a tip.

Wait staff: "Hey, last week we treated you like shit and you left a $100 tip! Today we treated you like a king, and you only left a penny. What's up with that?"

Scruffy: "Oh, no... the penny was for last week, and the $100 gold coin was for this week!"

In America, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 and hasn't been raised in 15 years. The federal minimum wage for wait staff is $2.13 per hour.

This burger is about $15.00.

So across the street, another burger joint pays the staff a living wage, and the same burger is $25.00

@milyjohn When people stop tipping, no one will work at these places. Simple supply and demand. When people start tipping me for my research work, I might change my mind. At least here in UK, tipping is optional.

"Pay the staff a decent wage!"
That implies it's the employer's fault. It's more than that, it's also the customer's fault for avoiding the employer who takes care of their staff. You know that the customers aren't going to pay an extra $10 for the exact same food.

OK, so that leaves us with a full-out boycott by wait staff.

You'd be less of an asshole for leaving no tip than a penny tip. In the tipped wage system we have, flawed as it is, I still believe even poor service deserves the bare minimum of a tip. The lowest I've gone is 12% for some piss poor service. At least then they aren't making sub-minimum wage. Everyone deserves to make a living wage!

I don't see why they deserve a tip for a job they are already getting paid to do. Other people with much more demanding jobs that require much more education, time, and expense don't get tips.
