I am not rich, and I fell on hard times because covid set me back.

I don’t know, seems like a “tip- no tip” basis.

Either tip a respectable amount for their work/effort, or just skip altogether. Like if it (the financial situation) was that bad, would you tip a penny? People won’t be able to read our personal situations, but they do read currency, and someone would interpret that on their part as: they’re not worth much, or their work was given a low rating…

and even if they hate the job, a low currency rating is almost impossible to give. If they offered poor service, that would simply be “no tip,” and maybe even a word with the manager, but to give a penny or dollar… is eh, you know? 😬🤷‍♀️

Good intentions, you have, but they get easily lost in translation, unless you told the worker, “hey this is all I got on me.”

At that point, just save the dollar for sunnier days.

It’s a vibe. It’s a learning experience. No shame..

I assume u went out to eat, in which case the 1.00 was less than 18%, in which case I’d say Yes. You don’t have to eat out if your struggling eat at home!

however, if you were moving for instance, and really struggling, and only tipped the movers 1.00 than that is different. Moving for example is a necessity in some instances.

You have to put yourself first and take care of yourself first.

When the day comes when you make far more money and are in a position to give more than you give more.

It depends on where it was and the circumstances. If it was in a coffee shot drive through or an ice cream shop, then no because those are not tipped positions. People putting out cups with a "Tips" sign taped to them does not make them tipped positions.

But if it was at a restaurant and the server did a good job, then yes you're an asshole. Servers in restaurants make a tiny hourly wage and rely on the tips for the majority of their income. Its designed that way to motivate servers to do a good job, and to give customers some recourse if the server does a shitty job. Not tipping a restaurant server who did a good job is definitely an asshole move.

It is not our job to keep everyone in every shop employed. Waiters and waitresses in sit-down restaurants deserve tips. People standing behind a counter entering numbers in a cash register do not deserve 20% of whatever already high price you're having to pay. So $1 is fine.

Nope. Sometimes I never tip, like at a coffee house. It's not out faults that they don't pay these people enough.. in other countries like Australia they don't even TIP. Because they get a livable wage!!
