Should the USA separate into two countries?

Writing in The Federalist, Jesse Kelly in April this year likened America to a couple that can’t stop fighting and should get a divorce. Literally. His proposal was to split the country into two new ones: a ‘red’ state and a ‘blue’ state.

There are many examples of countries dividing. However, sometimes the more powerful portion will use military force to prevent the separation which is what happened in the War Between the States. The South would have retained their independence if early on they used their military to capture and hang the evil murderous psychopath Lincoln. Instead they did nothing for a couple of years while the North built up an army.

It would be better to separate into the 50 states and for the states to divide further when the political differences within a state are great. We could have a confederation of the state with no central governing entity which would allow people to trade and vote with their feet. Trucking, other transportation of goods and mail would be by which ever private companies were the most efficient.

It would be better to unite the people in the country, but its at a breaking point thanks to the media and biden. It can be fixed since the core fundamentals of the nation can be reinforced but it takes a leader who actively has the interest of the people in mind, and who is willing to tackle the media's slander.

@milyjohn I don't think Trump is enough, but its the most logical next step. First you elect Trump so the majority of the country feels heard and you focus on localizing a lot of the decision making / power. And then after Trump you elect a populist who can continue the journey but without the division. But the second part only works if the media has been properly dealt with, if they can just slander 24/7 again it would become the same thing again.

So either proper lawsuits every time they write lies, public awareness campaigns about the lying nature or things as simple as blocking slandering companies from entering the whitehouse press events / denying all interviews while simultaniously providing newer integral media companies that access.

They have plenty of tools but as long as they keep playing in the hands of the large corporations people will think that any president that serves the people is a new incarnation of hitler. So unity can not be achieved as long as the media keeps their act up. Since a large portion of the country knows better and a large portion of the country falls for it.

No. We could never agree on where to draw the borders - the confederacy would always demand more. And the mass migration would be way too expensive - right wing leadership is defined by people who dont pay their debts so they would never pay their share. And it wouldn't fundamentally solve the problem of the right being focused on feelings of rage and beliefs in victimhood while the left is focused on idealisms that abstract away practicalities - though i am of the mind that the left would become practical if the obstructive element of the right was removed. Indeed, it would just make the bubbles thicker making some wildly escalated war inevitable.

Diversity of opinions is what makes a country strong. Splitting the US into separate countries would weaken both.

It is a very tough question because I don't know what the right answer is.

Unlike the previous precursors to the breaking of the country, the federal government is refusing to enforce a law that has been codified since the county's founding rather than trying to abolish something that states liked and would rather leave than accept that change.

Today, the federal government couldn't make it any clearer that it is being led by rogue elements that want to destroy the country. I don't think national divorce is worth doing unless it is absolutely clear that we cannot stop the rogues but I can't blame those who think it is necessary.

Your update is very naïve...

From the Declaration of Independence in 1776 until the Constitution went into effect in 1789, the US WAS a confederation governed under the Articles of Confederation.

There were A LOT of problems with America then, much it having to do with the national government not being able to do much and with no mechanism to deal with interstate squabbling. So, in 1787, the Founding Fathers planned on overhauling the Articles of Confederation. However, they soon realized it was a doomed exercise, so they opted for a federation over a confederation (these ALWAYS fail), and they developed the Constitution that we have today.

It doesn't work that way. You are naïve.
For instance, suppose all these people that "vote with their feet" move. Then, you basically have an immigration problem not unlike the people at our southern border who "voted with their feet" to head north to the USA. Once all these immigrants arrive, that makes keeping them and everyone else already there alive. At minimum, you need to start building new infrastructure such as schools, housing, hospitals, roads, and expand government since everyone needs government services such as police and fire. Who's going to pay for all of this? The taxpayers. So, first, new debt is issued to pay for the immediacy of it, but it is paid off in the long run by new, higher taxes... In the long run, it's all the same.

That's how it is everywhere. Why? Basic economics and biology.
