Actually, the African-American vote initially went overwhelmingly for the Republican party - the party of Abraham Lincoln after all. This only began to change with the advent of the New Deal in the Democratic party in the 1930s under Franklin Roosevelt.
Yet even this was not decisive. It being recalled that the Democrats were - as late as the 1960s - the party of George Wallace and other segregationists. This resulting in a profound split within the Democratic party until the late 1960s, early 1970s. (Also, the formation of the so-called "Dixiecrats.")
The real shift of the African-American vote to heavily favor the Democrats only began with the advent of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society as well as the signing of the Civil Rights Act. This, of course, not happening overnight, but with MLK's assassination, President Johnson was able to capitalize on the sentiment on behalf of the African-American community, and make it almost monolithically Democratic.
Interestingly, there are now signs that - at least at the margins - the African-American vote is beginning to shift a bit more to the GOP. This having to do with the improvement in the African-American standard of living and also with the shift of the GOP to a more blue collar orientation.
It remains to be seen if this will continue, but recent polling, for example, shows that President Biden's approval among African-Americans is well below historic norms for a Democrat. (Interestingly, back in the 60s and 70s, Biden tilted toward the segregationist wing of the Democratic party. Only beginning in the late 70s did Biden begin to identify more with his party's shift to a more interracial orientation.)
P. S. As per a previous question, and related to this question, the Republican party identifies with the classical liberal tradition. Not entirely - American political parties are not ideological parties as you tend to see in Europe but rather are coalitions of various groups with compatible interests.)
To explain this in brief. Classical liberalism is the product of the Enlightenment. The idea that there are rules of nature - just as there are rules of physics - and that if the law is made in conformance with these laws, society will function smoothly. Thus, for example, Adam Smith - whose was that if government stood aside, the laws of economic nature would be able to function unhindered, this resulting in economic prosperity.
The American revolution was a product of the Enlightenment. "Men are endowed with certain inalienable rights." The argument being that if the natural law was allowed to function unhindered and humans were able to exercise the rights granted them by nature, a healthy, peaceful and prosperous society would follow.
There was a reaction to this among what came to be called the classical conservatives. This best illustrated by the man who is typically seen as the father of classical conservativism - Edmund Burke - whose ideas were best expressed in his book, "Reflections on the Revolution in France."
Burke argued that rights were not spontaneous, but were rather philosophical constructs born of - or in reaction to - historical events. Thus, these rights had to be nurtured and adapted to the cultures in which they evolved.
There was very little appeal in the USA - again, a nation born of the Enlightenment - of Burke's arguments. However, a split evolved within liberalism. The later liberals - called "radical" liberals (please note, "radical" referring to the ancient Greek definition, i. e. "to the root of...") - argued that society had been so corrupted that activist government had to step in to right the imbalances.
This is basically the divide in the USA. "Conservatives" are the classical liberals of the 18th century. Though here too, there are limits. The USA is rooted in the Protestant Reformation - from which the Enlightenment was born - and Protestant traditionalism tends toward social traditionalism and argues that government should nurture such traditionalism. It being recalled, again, that American parties are not ideological, but rather are coalitions.
The Democrats are the liberal party, i. e. the party of "radical liberalism." Which is to say activist government and - interestingly - a morality that is not bound by tradition.
This is, in brief, the distinction between the two parties and the usage of the terms "liberal" and "conservative" come from in the USA. There is not really a "classical" - in the Burkean sense - conservativism. Although several American writers - notably George F. Will in his book "Statecraft as Soulcraft" - do espouse classical conservatism.
@GuyAnswersGirls123 @OddBeMe
This is good information on what the terms actually mean.
Well done Night! What you say is pretty consistent with what I have researched rather than the establishment media narrative.
Yeah, the Democrats have always been opportunists. They just shifted to being overtly racist and discriminating against blacks to being overtly racist and discriminating against whites. And their policies are terrible for people of all races.
It always perplexed me how Democrats managed to win over the majority of black voters. Everything that seems to have had the most negative effects on American black people seemed to originate with Democrats like slavery in the South, Jim Crow laws, the welfare state which disproportionately broke apart the black nuclear household, the racially-fueled war on drugs with the likes of Anslinger, etc. I am really glad to see a lot of black Americans starting to shift more away from the Democratic party although I'm surprised it took so long.
As a classical liberal I want a real liberal movement that is free from these Marxist socialists.
Think George Carlin and Thomas Jefferson type of liberal.
When I was younger the conservatives seemed to be more concerned with banning masturbation and making life all about jesus.. for everyone regardless if they consented. I think if they return to power like in the Bush years they will return to the same old habits.
That always made the most sense to me although it confuses me now that we have to distinguish "classic liberal". I am from Japan so I admittedly don't fully even understand what "liberal" means now when Americans say it.
I was taught that liberal means someone who values liberty above all else: individual rights and freedoms, property rights, and free markets (including free speech in a free and unregulated market of ideas). It's so opposite of what Americans call "liberal".
Then again the words just seem to become more and more twisted by progressives these days, like the idea that a man can get pregnant and racism only applies when directed towards people perceived to belong in a racial group that lacks as much power as another. It's all very confusing to me as one who learned English as a second language with all these changing definitions of words.
"Classical liberals were committed to individualism, liberty, and equal rights, as well as some other important tenants of leftism, since classical liberalism was introduced in the late 18th century as a leftist movement. They believed these goals required a free economy with minimal government interference."
@nightdrot would you be so kind as to help me explain some definitions of American political beliefs such as classical conservatism and modern variants of political beliefs?
@GuyAnswersGirls123 I think you already have a pretty good grasp on the situation, better than a lot of Americans actually. Your second and third paragraph are dead on!
Cheers and thanks for the explanations! 🍻 I didn't realize classical liberalism was associated as leftist!
@GuyAnswersGirls123 you're welcome : )
@nightdrot no problem at all!
And the REPIGLIKKKLANS want to bring Fascism to America.
@handsomelad70: Do keep up- the Democrats have already done it. The Republicans are a controlled pretend opposition.

Yes, and after all these years of the democrats putting it over on them they are finally waking up. Snoop Dogg is supporting Trump. One of the founders of BLM is also supporting Trump. He says he is sick of democrats showing up every 4 years for votes and not seeing any results. Many black communities are angry with Biden because illegal aliens are flooding their cities and using all the services. They get the scraps if there are any. Trump is polling 20% of the black vote some polls say higher. Most say that if Trump gets 20% of the black vote there is no path to victory for Joe Biden.
Not a US citizen. I did think that was interesting. Translating Democrat to Australian Labor Party, I see elements of that. It would be bad for the 'Progressive' ALP if problems were fixed because that would kill off an agenda item and cause the loss of excessively well paid jobs plus the general bitching and moaning they spend their time on.
After the REPIGLIKKKLANS have othered African Americans for nigh onto three generations, if they (I'm part African American; my mother was born in Detroit, Mich., while my father hailed from Harrow, a small town outside of Windsor, Ont., where I've spent my entire 70 years) vote for their loathers, they're on crack, coke, meth, corn liquor and every other illicit stimulant. African Americans and progressives in general should start a new party which will replace the sclerotic DUMBOCRATS and TRULY represent the 99.999999% instead of the overlord swine ala the GOP.("Goobers, Oddballs, Popinjays.")
You think he'd have preferred Trump or the Republican party?
Saying your allies aren't doing enough for you isn't the same as saying you'd prefer your enemies (and MLK's Democrats still included all the Dixiecrats in states now controlled by Republicans).
Absolutely, Trump is a moderate New Yorker and has been pretty liberal all of his life.
Trump it's in no way an enemy to blacks unlike Joe Biden who supported the crime bill that would give people a minimum of 5 years for a small amount of cocaine. Joe Biden also made comments about integrated schools being racial jungles and he was for segregation. He wasn't even for gay marriage when Trump was perfectly okay with homos.
Face it, the Democrats are NOT liberal. They are weird, Marxist racists who are white supremacist and think black people are so incompetent they can't even get an ID.
He was probably way ahead of his time and realized that probably by the 60’s neither party nor politician gives a rats ass about the American people. That the Democrats speak of great things for the blacks…. for all of us and do nothing.
That is historically untrue: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan and before you call that fake, remind me -- which political party is for removing Confederate statues and which political party is against it?
as if you care about history. every time, Republicans campaign on racism and immigrants. as for Biden, why did David Duke not endorse him but did indorse Trump? why does Haley have to dance around racism?
and explain this to me. Obama got 131,278,107 votes. Tim Scott got 194 votes.
The Democrats campaign on racism against whites and now they are even anti-semitic. They also have a soft bigotry of low expectations against blacks. Their argument that blacks cannot get voter ID is absolutely ludicrous! Not to mention their policies have destroyed black families and Joe bided himself supported a crime bill that would give you a minimum of 5 years regardless of what the judge says for just a small amount of cocaine or crack.
I don't know who David is. Haley is a democrat plant.
only white Republicans complain about racial discrimination. www.brennancenter.org/.../impact-voter-suppression-communities-color he's the former Grand Wizard of the KKK. Haley has been a Republican for for years: In 2004, Haley ran for the South Carolina House of Representatives to represent District 87 in Lexington County. She ran in the Republican primary on a platform of education reform and property tax relief.[36][37] Initially, she ran because she believed that incumbent Republican state representative Larry Koon, who was the longest-serving legislator in the South Carolina Statehouse at the time, was not going to seek reelection. However, Koon entered the race just before the filing deadline. Nevertheless, Haley stayed in the race.
I'm no democrat -- and as shitty as my life has been -- that has never been an issue... would certainly trade, though.
watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3ET3XDpbK0
Even Malcolm X warned against specifically "White" Liberals.. So that ain't surprising..
I've seen this.
I don't like them either. Lol
Okay, I'm a Conservative and even I'm sick of this argument. Their ideologies have flip flopped. The Democratic party 100 years ago, is NOT the same Democratic party as today. Although the anti-Semitism seems to have remained.
@Juxtapose The party switch myth is believed by a lot of people because it was widely spread in left circles for a long time, and by the time this assertion was brought to the right, most politically active people on the left completely believed it and backed anyone making that argument - enough that many on the right accepted it as truth without any evidence.
Dinesh does a great job of crushing that lie, and no one who has brought out that lie in a debate survived the encounter - they got embarrassed to death.
This is why it is so important to do the work and not just take propaganda as fact.
Which party TODAY screams the loudest when statues of Confederate politicians or generals are taken down or military bases named after Confederate generals are renamed?
I don't have the statistics for that but probably anyone who's not an sjw.
I don't agree with historic statues and whatnot being removed. It does a disservice to the past and if anything it will lead to the past being more likely to repeat itself since we don't have an example to remind ourselves of it.
What's next? Get rid of Lovecraft's books because he's a racist? He even named his cat the hard n word that I cannot say on this website.
Forget the past and you're doomed to repeat it.
Secondly, not all status are of Confederate politicians, and generals.
The one removed from my town was an abolitionist in the Union army.
I've also seen many of the founding fathers statues taken down and vandalized. For all their short comings, they were still the founding fathers who did great things when starting this country and constructing our current Constitution and Bill of Rights.
The issue isn't that its Confederate statues and pictures, It's that this nation's history is being erased before our eyes that we have an issue with.
It's like I said earlier, if you erase history, you risk repeating your mistakes.
@OtterMan68 your question does not answer @Juxtapose’s question.
@nonyabeez-wax people don't need statues to learn history. Did you know there's a statue of Gen. William Worth in NYC? I'll wager 99% of NYC residents don't know who William Worth is. Heck, I'd wager most people in Forth Worth, TX, don't know who he is!
It's not like burnig or banning textbooks.
@Sasahara it's a question designed to paint a current party as the party of the KKK. It's disengenuous.
Which party would MLK support TODAY?
The Republicans.
As the Democrats have proven that they will not support the likes of Sewell, or the first black man on the supreme court, going so far as to call them uncle toms, and dragging their names through the mud.
Then you have DEI, of which teaches the opposite of what MLKs message was.
Its not a disingenuous question, you're being disingenuous by trying to imply that the Democrats would support him TODAY when they definitely would not based on their stances TODAY.
And statues are apart of our history. Once erected, they shouldn't be torn down. They are banning older history books and rewriting history with the newer books.
And before you give me the whole "republicans and gay books" - BS argument, I'm gonna go ahead and nip it in the bud.
Those books are neither being burned nor banned throughout the state. They're only being banned in the school system as the school system has an approved reading list to prevent students from being Exposed to pornographic content, which is what these books specifically are. Pornographic content, not suitable for children, which is why they are being removed from the school systems. Any school that puts these books in their libraries are in violation of U. S. code 18 §1470, Which is federal law already on the books.
Rewriting history and banning porn from schools are not the same thing.
Clearance Thomas**
@OtterMan68 actually the Republicans would support MLK. The progressives almost exclusively judge people by immutable characteristics to the point where they will hire based on that and other such things.
@OtterMan68 He would support Republicans. @nonyabeez-wax and @Juxtapose explains things very well.
People with common sense would have thought so
MLK would like to see the state of race relations today.
Yeah…the name 150 years ago. What party gave MLK access to the White House to talk civil rights…?
"Actually, the African-American vote initially went overwhelmingly for the Republican party - the party of Abraham Lincoln after all. This only began to change with the advent of the New Deal in the Democratic party in the 1930s under Franklin Roosevelt.

The Democrats have always been the racist ones and Joe Biden was originally a segregationist.
Blah blah, Again I’ll ask…which party gave audience to MLK to talk and advance voting rights? Hint:
